At uni #research showcase presenting @c2Lab and some of our #network analysis demos, such as a dynamic network visualization tool for character recurrences in Charles Dickens' novels & a phylodynamics dashboard we developed during the early days of covid. https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/itit-2017-0023/html https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.02.07.20021139v2 #NetworkScience #ComplexSystems #Complexity #NewZealand #Science #fediscientists #NZTwits #NZToots #NZtech

Next was an interesting talk by Isabel Behncke Izquierdo on social #complexity in bonobos at @sfiscience. By mapping interaction #networks between bonobos, Behncke shows not only intriguing results for our close relatives but also implications for human groups https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbOYjRttVz0 (3/7)
Next was an interesting talk by Luis Bettencourt on understanding cities as complex systems at #NICO. Using a #complexity lens to study how cities change social ties and outcomes is always fascinating, and this talk goes over a variety of important aspects of #cities that are related to important development goals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAiwNbU_lYA (7/8)
Next was a fantastic talk by Chris Mowles on #complexity and #management at the Cranfield School of Management. The Q&A here is particularly good, with brilliant insights on how management doesn't take into account the inherent randomness of the world, the problems with solely focusing on individuals, and more. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE4ytczLm2E (3/5)
First was an enjoyable discussion with Jean Boulton on #complexity theory and #management at #Cranfield School of Management. This conversation covers a lot of ground, and considers the importance of complexity from a variety of perspectives https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLzoNqtEbho (2/7)

First was a deep conversation with Carlos Gershenson, touching on the core of #complexity issues as diverse as balance, criticality, antifragility, and systems philosophy at @sfiscience https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4ShhqDzYnU (2/10)
Next was an intriguing talk by Victor Moller Poulsen on mapping #religion relationships at the @sfiscience. By attempting to use expert labeling of religious characteristics, the authors built a model to classify relationships between religions. I'd like a lot more model validation, testing, and expert comparison before taking any conclusions to heart, but I think it can be viewed as nice exploratory work https://lnkd.in/geN_Hxr9 (4/9) #complexity
Incredible day chairing the inaugural Capital City Complex Systems Symposium #cccss in #Wellington today. Started off /w keynote by great Prof Michael Small followed by talks on pandemic modeling, modeling the natural world, complexity of language & culture. Enabled by @tepunahamatatini and @c2Lab #Complexity #Science #NetworkScience

Next was an excellent discussion with Ricardo Hausmann and Doyne Farmer on #complexity and political economy at the @sfiscience. The increasingly important lens of economic complexity is examined here, as is its intersection with society and politics more broadly. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOGMNqTWhqo&t=4s (3/10)
Next was an interesting talk from Benjamin Golub on using #NetworkScience to analyze firm relationships at the Vermont Complex Systems Center. The combination with economic analysis presented here shows why interfirm structural factors can drive a sectoral and individual company robustness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QAmKqIM-VM (4/5) #economics #complexity

Next was an important talk by Danilo Spinola on structural #economic change in small countries at the University of #Guyana's Green Institute. No easy answers here, and I loved the economic #complexity angle presented as well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF7Pu4jzv0s (9/12)
Haven't written a real #introduction yet. I am a #university #scholar in #NewZealand, working on #methods that fall into realm of #complexity #science. One key focus is to understand events that cause systemic #change despite sitting at margins of statistical significance. We do a fair bit of #nlproc, sequence and network analysis. Applications are in #psychology #digitalhumanities #climate science Computational Social Science et al. I also study design & operation of socio-technical systems.

Next was a tough talk on toxic online communities by Jeremy Blackburn at the University of Vermont #Complexity Group. A historical, quantitative analysis shows how we can understand the evolution of this dark underbelly of society https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmVoSYlzcyA (5/8)
Last was a nice short talk at #CogSci by Marcel Montrey on how ingroup-biased copying promotes cultural #diversity and #complexity. This talk deftly combines experimental work demonstrating this phenomenon, then follows up with modeling to hypothesize mechanisms. Highly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CFuZfrzaFs&list=PL5FQGISvWBK3gNFqx2eboI8etItUC2MFW&index=1 (6/6)

I wrote a toot about what I do in my #research together with some great people at the #Complexity and Connection #Science Lab (https://complexity.wgtn.ac.nz/). Here is one other part of my reality since March about which I engaged a lot on the bird app: I got #LongCovid. Curious to see if a similarly active #community beyond academics grows here, as I can see for many the value to openly talk about their day to day experiences with this new normal.
