#Celtic #FolkloreThursday: „Some think #Tlachtga may have been one of the Tuatha de Danann, others that she was a solar deity on account of her connection with Mogh Ruith. Simon Magus‘ three sons raped Tlachtga. She fled back to Ireland, where in time she gave birth to three sons on the Hill of Tlachtga. It was a long and difficult delivery during which all her energy ebbed. She was buried where she died, and the area took her name. Her sons were Doirb, Cuma and Muach, and one of the older versions of the story says they went on to rule the provinces of #Munster, #Leinster and #Connacht, and that while their names were remembered, no harm would ever come to #Eire.“

Once the sound of a gigantic voice issuing from the tiny opening of the cave called #Oweynagat, the cave of cats, frightened away the heroine or goddess Erne and a group of maidens from Cruachan, the great capital of the province of #Connacht. `Taking with her the comb (symbol of feminine potency) of her mistress, the great queen #Medb, Erne took her party northward to a lake in which they all drowned.` This is how the river Erne (an Éirne in Modern #Irish) and the lake from which it rises gained their names.

Queen #Medb of #Connacht seems to have been eager to get rid of the king of #Ulster. Before marching into his territory the consulted #druid prophesied that her son Maine would kill king #Conchobar. None of Medb`s 7 sons had that name, so she renamed them all.

Stories of both the Boyne and the Shannon rivers include descriptions of the magical #hazel groves that fed the fish that swam at the river’s source. Uneaten nuts turned into bubbles of inspiration, readily seen in the Shannon’s source in Co. #Cavan, which bubbles from underground springs feeding the pool.

At Mac #Dathó feast #Cet of the #Connacht men emerges as the most likely candidate for the #curadmír, the hero’s portion of the meat. But then #Conall Cernach arrives from #Ulster. Cet concedes to him, saying, `If my brother, #Anlúan, was here, you would not be getting the curadmir, for he is the better warrior.` Conall replies, `But he is here!” and pulls Anlúan’s head from his belt and throws it at Cet so hard, he is splattered with his brother’s blood.
