i just opened up Github in a code base that was so terrible that it was suggesting commented-out code

Seems like this meme died sometime in the last year, somewhere around when caused half of the population to deny there was ever a problem and the other half of the population to just use

I’m excited to share my first ever post on @mfowler’s blog. I cover using with GitHub : what works, what doesn’t, and what gotchas to watch out for.

Special thanks to the Gen AI tooling exploration ensemble (see post) and to @bboeckel for her help with the article and her overall support.

Update: my company canceled its GitHub account today due to lackluster reviews from users and legal concerns.

I'm testing every copilot I can get my hands on. Windows, office, dynamics, power platform, GitHub. So far, GitHub is the only one that's proven to be the least bit useful. Specifically, I'm like 0 for 20 on getting it to do anything I want in dynamics and power platform.

and LLMs look promising, I mean dig less, get results and learn (?) faster, have new perspectives on results.

But what’s ‘aha’ moment, for engineers?

I mean you write hundreds lines of code in a good day, why do I need it’s ten minutes of typing at most. Handle stack traces via chatgpt, maybe, but It doesn’t look like a big deal to open the file on the correct line and look into the code.

I see how it may help to write typical letters/docs, which will read though 🤔

GitHub can be a great tool that goes with your coding flow and can speed you up. At the same time, it can amplify bad practices and even cost you time and make you tired.

Stay critical. Don't get too lazy. Smaller completions are usually better -- don't try to get too large chunks of code. If a larger proposal isn't 90% right, discard it and write it by yourself.

It would be nice if the plugins for Github Copilot showed you which Github account they were using, in case you happen to have access to both an Enterprise and a Personal license for Copilot. I'm now worried about accidentally leaking company code to my personal Copilot.

I've been using Github Copilot all day, and I have to say, it's almost spooky how good some of its suggestions are. I was working in Python today, but I'm about to give it a go in Rust.

"Copilot Pilot" will be a new job title.

That job sounds glamorous and might even come with 10% extra pay, but watch as executives expect miracles from the "pilots" and coworkers dump much of their work on them as well.

and are trying to derail code fight
And so far, they might succeed: Where's the smoking gun?
Copilot & Codex were trained from tons of publicly available , including plaintiffs' GitHub repos, and other materials. When presented with prompt by a user, models will generate snippets in response, using materials it learned from. But is this the meaning of ? And can it be used ?
