@rebeccasaurus velocity starts out at about 11 km/s in an Earth reference frame. The initial ascent to Earth orbit took about ten minutes for the stack, and most of that was outside of the appreciable atmosphere, with few obstacles (the low Earth orbit environment was very much less polluted back in the 1960s). If two seconds were a make or break deal, you were in big trouble anyway.

As for , reads are also destructive, so no real difference there.
