I work for the #NHS, manual labour collecting bins, removals, recycling etc. I work full time.

Even with the Government's proposed 6% pay-rise its not enough for a mortgage, the food price rises etc. I'm making ends meet by living with my parents (at 46). Not ideal!! I also changed my hours so I work double hours at weekends, bank holidays etc.

All of our team struggle financially, even those married to nurses etc.

History.

After the devastation of World War One, between 1917-1926 the UK government introduced the "excess profits duty" (tax) of 80% of profits above "pre-war standard profits".

Today, when grotesque profits are being made by big business out of the (so-called) "cost of living crisis", surely it's time for a similar period of excess profit tax?

Surely, it's big businesses "duty" to help us all out in this time of crisis?

Or is this only a "crisis" for the poor?

I won't hold my breath.

However, as the polls swing decisively against them, with (for instance) the Tories only polling a majority among women who have no financial worries at all, economic & material reality is surging back into #politics.

Opposition decries 'failure' in housing over vast number of young adults living at home: 68% of young adults (in Ireland) aged 25 to 29 are living with their parents, according to Eurostat, a figure well above the EU average of 42.1% for the age range.

The current (further) dip is being blamed on the wet weather by analysts but the bigger picture is that the #Tories & their handmaidens at the BoE are disciplining #workers for having the audacity to try an maintaining their standard of living.... at a time when it is seen as important that companies 'maintain' their profitability!

Ruth Gregory of Capital Economics, commenting in the FT on quarterly data showing no generalised increase in firms' profitability notes: 'In aggregate, firms appear to have protected their margins, not padded them'!

So two comments:
a) the word 'aggregate' is doing a lot of work here - the key issue is not all firms' margins, but this that provide core goods/services, which are non-discretionary.... other firms may have seen their margins squeezed by the #Costoflivingcrisis.

Its not suprise that #RishiSunak has pledged to keep the 'triple lock' on #statepensions;
