While the FT piece makes good points about the dishonesty behind the accusation, it also targets an audience that actually knows what the #Council of the #EU is (half of his readers might even be able to tell it apart from the European Council!) This is uh--not the norm among voters and the Council's lack of transparency means they never have to take direct responsibility for anything. #BlameBrussels

@junesim63 i don't know enough about the subject, and this article was disappointing.

Whilst trying to compare council maintained schools and academies, it didn't explain the distinctions of how the are run and why they may perform better or worse (I.e. Even if academies are not a solution, there must have been a rationale for the change).

She tried something on in my borough - #wandsworth - a bit over ten years ago. She wanted to use her connections to evict a whole set of flourishing small businesses and charities from a building so that she could put a school there. Very fortunately the then #conservative #cabinet #member of the #council responsible for #education and #children's services would have none of it. So she went off to somewhere else where I understand #SuellaBraverman was able to help her set up.

Her attitude in #london at least was not very different to that of #lordsalisbury in the 1890s. He created the original #london #boroughs in response to the progressive-controlled #london #county #council - ironically the progressives lost control of the latter early in the 1900s and never got it back. Similarly she built up the inner london boroughs in the 1980s - ironically all but one of these have since rejected the #conservatives - even #wandsworth and #westminster !

Re 4/9 Reducing the number of #Council configurations to only one in order to create a genuinely #bicameral legislative system involving the #EP and the Council. Like the EP plenary, the General Affairs Council becomes the only legislative Council meeting in public.

@kravietz I suggest if they want to invest massively in #renewables, have enough EU budget resources to support Ukraine and increase defence cooperation, #Europeans should start voting for parties that support these things in their national elections. Of course, most don't realise the #EU is run by our national governments, have no idea what the #Council does or how Weber's #EPP is chasing after the far right at the moment, etc.

The first two will be for seats that have become vacant already due to the previous members "applying for the Chiltern Hundreds" so as to become ineligible automatically. These are Selby and Ainsty and Uxbridge and South Ruislip. The indications are that polling day will be either 13th July or 20th July so the results should be known before the summer recess.

Crucially this will mean that the new #VoterID requirements already in force for #council elections in #England will not apply.

The #UK does in fact have a political office including the title #President. This is that of #Lord #President of the #council They preside over the #privycouncil and are the leader of the #HouseofCommons.The current one both proclaimed #KingCharlesIII last September and carried the #swordofstate at the #Coronation. Although called #lord they do not actually sit in the #houseoflords. The current #lordpresident is #pennymordaunt.

#michaelashcroft was a significant player in my part of #london, setting up what is now #ashcroftacademy - a specialist publicly-funded secondary school - employing Edward #Lister who later became leader of #wandsworth #council and later still #chiefofstaff to #BorisJohnson both at #cityhall and in #downingstreet. He also supported #justinegreening who took #putney for the #conservatives in 2005 and retained it until standing down in 2019.

#woking #council have now issued a section 114 notice - similar to filing for #bankrupcy. The debt to the #publicworksloansboard alone appears to stand at £1.3 Billion! The #publicworksloans board has existed for nearly one hundred years and lends to #localgovernment at a slight mark up over #ukgilts - any default would go onto the #ukgovernment #balance #sheet
