Sometimes I like to think about the time our PHO, Bonnie Henry, said that it wasn't like she had warehouses full of rapid tests hidden somewhere and then Brishti Basu FOUND THE WAREHOUSES where they, in fact, were. Remember that? People really, should, when they try to decide whether to believe Bonnie Henry about anything.

let's normalize use of "acute phase" when describing initial covid symptoms or lack thereof.

as in, I was lucky to have pretty mild symptoms during my ACUTE PHASE OF covid infection.
or, regarding transmission dynamics, it's important to understand that most (60%?) of people are asymptomatic during their acute phase of covid infection.

it's scientifically accurate and socially helpful.

if a journalist uses "acute" in an article I would be so happy and send them flowers.

Food and Drug Administration approves COVID boosters for upcoming season

“The updated vaccines are expected to provide good protection against COVID-19 from the currently circulating variants,” the FDA said in a statement. “Barring the emergence of a markedly more virulent variant.. the composition of COVID-19 vaccines may need to be updated annually, as is done for the seasonal influenza vaccine.”

It's weird how no one has ever debated the efficacy of N95 masks against tuberculosis. Everyone agrees they work on that airborne illness. Odd, that.

Today I remembered that in mid-2020 the Israeli military bombed Palestinian covid testing centers

In Amerikkka the government figured out its easier just to defund them

Anecdata: when my bus let out at Harvard this morning, there were 6 of us in the back and four of us were wearing masks (3 (k)n95-style, 1 seemingly thick reusable).

Covid’s back, you say? As disabled and vulnerable people know all too well, it never went away

“More than three years on from the start of the pandemic, there’s understandably a desire to ‘move on’, to bury painful memories of lockdowns and watching loved ones dying on iPads. This has only been encouraged by the government, which has honed the message ‘Covid is over’, as if saying this somehow makes it so.”

The following text is an excerpt from the linked article, posted 2023-09-10:

We don’t really talk about coronavirus at all... This has only been encouraged by the government, which has honed the message “Covid is over”, as if saying this somehow makes it so... the result is a kind of mass denial – an agreed forgetting. The subject crops up from time to time. A breaking news banner announces a new variant. A friend texts that she’s stuck in bed “with the worst summer cough”. Then we carry on – until we are forced to remember once again...

...the daily number of positive coronavirus tests in England has been increasing since the end of June – a trend that is likely to grow in the coming weeks, as we socialise more indoors and children mix at school... at last count, 1.5 million people [in the UK alone] were experiencing long Covid symptoms that adversely affected their daily activities, and the virus still poses a significant risk of death to many people...

While some healthcare workers are taking precautions at their own discretion, NHS staff in England don’t have to wear a mask, and the majority who have respiratory symptoms are no longer asked to test for Covid. That means a patient with lung disease could be forced to get treatment from a nurse with a Covid cough...

The trouble is, denial is not a long-term plan. Coronavirus is effectively a fire. Ignoring it doesn’t stop the virus – it just lets the damage spread. The paradox of the pandemic has always been that the only way to “move on” is to actually engage with it...

But it also means confronting our impulse to believe that all of this is unnecessary and arduous. Even the phrase “Covid restrictions” – a term used by almost every media outlet – is loaded, suggesting low-key mitigations are heavy burdens rather than simple ways to free clinically vulnerable people. That the virus primarily “only” affects those with underlying health conditions has always been the unspoken excuse for indifference.

Der nĂ€chste Fall im Bekanntenkreis: Höchst-Vulnerable an erkrankt, weil nicht getestet wurde. Zum GlĂŒck alles gut ĂŒberstanden. Besuch hatte tagelang Husten - starke „ErkĂ€ltung“. Getestet wurde natĂŒrlich nicht. Auch eine Folge der permanenten Verharmlosung.

So my brother, who stopped masking, casually mentioned that he was the only person wearing a mask when he went to get a blood test last week. He also said he really hopes they reinstate mask mandates in healthcare in BC. This was after I relayed the experiences of some chronically ill and disabled folx I know on hear while accessing healthcare. Maybe there's hope in getting him back on the anti-eugenics wagon.

People are talking about 9/11 today as if the government isn't killing at least an equivalent amount of people every week through pandemic negligence, right now.
