Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov becomes the first person to perform a spacewalk, leaving his spacecraft Voskhod 2 for 12 minutes.
Later this year, an entirely private spaceflight (Polaris Dawn) will launch, taking four private citizens into the highest Earth orbit ever flown by any crewed spacecraft, for up to five days, and will include an EVA; the first commercial spacewalk.
