"The answer about human essence is not in being A and/or nonA, but it lies in the possibility of establishing a certain relationship between A and nonA. What is essential in human beings is their relationality, the relationship they establish between themselves and the Other" p. 70

Hello ,

when applying for government funding to do research (in the , but I'm interested in other national contexts & policies, too), what sort of 'outputs' are valued most?

Grateful for more nuanced & specific replies in addition to poll responses.

Thank you for your insights

If relevant, please feel free to share this account of mine with others on other platforms. I have no time, energy or much interest in setting up accounts on other platforms, but I am an academic, so I do miss the affordances of the bird that was - it was v. good to me during my years.

As an , I still look for cognate academic communities, but have few resources to spread myself across platforms.

"From a critical realist perspective, rigour and validity come from researcher reflexivity" (p. 378)

My book will be available in paperback from September 2023.

It's relevant to academic writers & their teachers because it engages critically with how knowledge is shaped by the forms of writing we choose.

You can pre-order from
bloomsbury.com/uk/what-makes-w as well as from your preferred bookshop.

If you've read it, please let me know what you think of it and how you've used it.

Thnx

"Attempting to explain the effects of an object which has emergent powers in terms of the relative contribution of its constituents is like attributing a certain percentage of the behaviour of water to hydrogen effects and the rest to oxygen effects" (Andrew Sayer, Method in Social Science, p. 181)

Is an emergent social practice? I think so, since it can't be reduced to constituent parts.

Could an LLM write a text that is academic?

3 questions about language use for :

1.what do you consider to be the difference in meaning between *in virtue of* & *because of* (eg 'the glass broke in virtue of being / because it was dropped')?
2. What determines your choice of either?
3. Do you know of published sources that discuss this?

Thx for your insights.

... also - and observing from a highly anecdotal/experiential standpoint -
local kids educated in comprehensive schools getting uni places in high-ranking unis get very mixed reactions from the parents of the privately-educated kids:

£50Kpa+ spent on private-school tuition fees by UK parents hoping to gain social advantage for their offspring leaves them with a v. bitter after-taste when the bright yet poorer kids get a look in

Professor Chrissie Boughey's Foreword often gets overlooked because it is listed under 'Front Matter', but I am really grateful to her for the way she frames

43 people are currently signed up to our session and now I'm not sure how to manage such a crowd, given the session is designed to be a 'conversation':

I'm currently reading a thesis that refers to cited authors by first name only (Paul, Carolyn, Roy, etc.).

Is this a 'thing'? A citing convention?

The thesis is about and

I rather like it. I feel like I am being told a story (all the evidence base is there, the argument holds, and cited authors are reified to the status of embodied people).

A 'commitment to the truth' is one of the Social Academic Practices (SAPs) I discuss in my book, where I argue that (bloomsbury.com/uk/what-makes-w) are not its performative forms but its epistemic virtues, including 'a commitment to the truth'.

Such a commitment - even if fallacious or mistaken - implies human agency

I've just finished reading these 2 texts in parallel, as I grapple with :

"I’m not going to converse with people who won’t posit my humanity as an axiom in the conversation" (nymag.com/intelligencer/articl)

and

"unless we can be clear about the human [...], discussions of the ‘post’ cannot meaningfully be brought to a close"
(markcarrigan.net/2022/04/15/a-)

Conference :

critrealap.net/iacr/conference

"This year's conference theme is "DESCRIBING + EXPLAINING + EVALUATING: THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD REVISITED."

The theme has been formulated to provide scholars--critical realist or otherwise--an opportunity to step back and reflect on the way they investigate phenomena and the underlying assumptions about reality and knowing that condition the way we form, describe, and explain phenomena.

Does anybody know why there is no entry for *critical realism* in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (plato.stanford.edu/index.html)?
