#SSD Firmware Update:

Seems like firmware version #M3CR046 for the #Crucial #MX500 series drives fixed the problem.

I've been running my regular workloads on them over the past week since the firmware updates and so far no drives have spontaneously gone offline 🤞

The drive hang is something I've experienced on all 3 of my 1TB MX500's that came with firmware version #M3CR045.

Yesterday, #Crucial released firmware version #M3CR046 for the MX500 series drives which is supposed to fix this issue.

Does it? No idea, I just finished upgrading my drives so I'll report back if it seems to be solved.

In the meantime, let's talk about the shitshow that is upgrading the firmware and what you can do if you can't update the firmware to {maybe} prevent the hang

Ok so, let's talk #Crucial #SSD drives, buggy #firmware, buggy support #software, and [maybe] a fix to unexpected drive hangs.

Backstory:
So I have a number of #MX500 1TB SSDs.

My older ones, perfectly fine. Rock solid no matter what I throw at them.

The newer ones that came with firmware version #M3CR045, not so much.

Apparently there's a bug {probably to do with #TRIM} in this firmware version that can cause the drive to "hang" or become unresponsive, requiring a power off/on to fix

At some point in the future I'll move the OS to a M.2 NVME drive, but otherwise I'm happy 😺

@funqr ausgiebig Erfahrung habe ich nur mit #WD Blue Serie, die kaufe ich seit Jahren und hatte bisher nie Probleme. Ob HDD oder SSD, keine Ausfälle im PC gehabt. 😉

Zudem nutze ich noch Speichermedien von #Crucial als SSD und M2(P1 Version) und kann davon auch nichts schlechtes berichten.

Ich würde bei einem #NAS dann HDD für das Datengrab neben, wenn da kaum Videos drüber laufen sollen. Ansonsten noch eine SSD als Zwischenspeicher/Cache, wenn im Gerät verfügbar.
