@SarahMackAttack I did a thread on a fossil from that same locality during #Crustmas last month: https://ecoevo.social/@Thomashegna/109610009786007357
On the 31th and final day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the fossil Rosagammarus minichiellus McMenamin et al 2013 from the Triassic Luning Formation in Nevada. This particular fossil has had an interesting path of reinterpretation. Buckle up!

On the 30th day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the bizarre tadpole shrimp-like Panacanthocaris ketmenica Novojilov, 1957. This odd beast is a member of a group called the Kazacharthrans—which seem to represent a central Asian Triassic radiation of weird, notostracan-like branchiopods. Conventionally, they are thought of as the sistergroup of notostracans, together forming a monophyletic clade called the Calmanostraca. #crustacea #arthropoda #branchiopoda

On the 29th day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the pentastomid Armillifer armillatus Wyman, 1848. Some might consider this a questionable addition to Crustmas, because until fairly recently, no one knew for certain whether or not pentastomids were crustaceans. Wikipedia sagely refers to them as 'degenerate.' #crustacea #arthropoda #parasite

Spoiler alert: another amphipod is planned for the last day of #Crustmas
The suspense should be killing you!

On the 28th day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the fossil talitrid amphipod Caecorchestia bousfieldi Hegna & Lazo-Wasem in Hegna et al 2020. Yes, I was somewhat involved in naming this one . . .
The cool thing about this amphipod is that it is preserved in amber. Typically, we associate amber with trees. And, we associate amphipods with water. How could these two meet? #crustacea #arthropoda #amphipoda #malacostraca #fossil

@jopabinia Thanks--with that addition, I think I have my final lineup through the 31st! Then I take a break. Cumacean-ophiles will be sadly disappointed, as will all of the copepodologists. #Crustmas #invertfest
On the 27th day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the fossil clam shrimp Eosestheria middendorfi (Jones, 1862). This clam shrimp is notably found in the so-called 'Feathered Dinosaur Beds' of northeastern China. Specifically, it is a major constituent of the 'Jehol Biota' from the Yixian Formation. It is not just the feathered dinosaurs that are exceptionally preserved. EVERYTHING is exceptionally preserved. #crustacea #arthropoda #china #cretaceous

@darkphotonstudio In addition to this #Crustmas present, you also now have an idea for a horror screenplay. Dibs on the role of 'scientist who is right but no one listens to.'
So, what crustacean did you want for #Crustmas but no one got for you? I need exciting ideas, folks! Otherwise the last several days of Crustmas are going to be all clam shrimp and kazacharthrans. #invertfest #crustacea

On the 26th day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the rhizocephalan Sacculina carcini Thompson, 1836. Which frankly, caused me to doubt the trueness of her love . . . You see S. carcini, and its rhizocephalan brethren are parasitic castrators of crabs. Not being content with being merely epizoans like other barnacles, they have evolved something far more sinister. #arthropoda #crustacea #cirripedia #invertfest

This is cool, I never knew #Crustmas was a thing to now... look... it's a thing

jopabinia@ecoevo.social - Giving this app more of a shot, here's some mastodon-only #Crustmas content! The hermit #crab Pagurus longicarpus from Nahant, MA, during unseasonably warm weather about a month ago."

#Crustmas hatte nicht den Sound den ich erwartete aber bin trotzdem froh draufgeklickt zu haben
On the 25th day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me a mantis shrimp, Odontodactylus scyllarus Linnaeus, 1758. This stomatopod crustacean is both beautiful and deadly. At the front end of O. scyllarus, it carries a superpowered, superfast biological hammer.

On the 24nd day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the tadpole shrimp, Triops cancriformis Bosc, 1801. I've been saving this lovely critter for Xmas Eve. . .
Many of you may know T. cancriformis (or the North American, T. longicaudatus) from little kits sold as souvenirs--where you can raise your very own 'Triassic Triops.' No, those eggs did not time travel from the Triassic.

A christmassy rock in a maërl bed in Mulroy Bay, Donegal, naturally decorated with anemones, hydroids, colonial sea squirts and one spider crab Macropodia rostrata for #crustmas. Feliz Noche a todos, Happy Christmas to all over here, and there, and everywhere.
On the 22nd day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the whale barnacle, Coronula diadema (Linnaeus, 1767). These little crustaceans are considered parasites on whales. Normal, everyday barnacles live their lives attached to a rock or shell on the sea bottom. Not so for C. diadema. . .
