As the children would say, 1970’s magazines depicting “go hard”. There’s something very special about them I can’t quite articulate, likely for paranormal reasons.

Every once in a while, as a treat, I pick a paragraph by Bernard and try and parse out what the heck is going on. The appears on his checklist of “Apparently Unknown Animals” (i.e. ), fair enough… but the paragraph self-debunks and proposes feral dogs and serial killers (!?!) as being behind the legend (!?!). As there is no new species this shouldn’t be but its “Father” apparently thinks otherwise! Bizarre.

I have read Mark A. Hall’s (and Loren Coleman and David Goudsward’s) posthumous Merbeings and… my god… even for someone deep into the one sentence had my jaw on the floor.

I don’t prefer realistic depictions of — in my mind, they’re best embodied by amateurish ink sketches on yellow photocopied paper. Gene Duplantier’s depiction of is just… perfection. I especially love that it looks like a modified Great Horned Owl!

My paintings of mystery animals and mountains:

The first is Puncak Jaya, the highest peak in Papua New Guinea, with the Ropen, which is a flying animal (possibly a pterosaur) rumoured to live there.

The second is a Yeti, wandering the highest of peaks in the Himalayas.

Despite this yarn seeming like quite the encounter, it actually made it onto Chad Arment’s regional cryptid checklist. How I read and re-read that endlessly as a youth dreaming of

Hall goes back and forth with Capparella in a later issue, but I won’t get into that drama here. I need to further descend into the MarkAHalliverse — there’s even a logo of sorts! I cannot help but notice “psychic web” and “unseen forces” on this… this… but Hall simply attributes the existence of to nothing more mystical than the “complacency and laziness of biologists.” I THINK, this stuff is hard to read.

The MarkAHalliverse is a WILD place, focusing on monstrous and other wonders from what one could call the flyover country of the USA. A rust-belt re-enchantment, if you would. That coupled with the DIY aesthetic of the quarterly publication creates quite the indelible experience.

Oh, before I get too far — for anyone interested in biography, the most complete recollection of Mark A. Hall’s life is his obituary:

Author/Illustrator Philippe Coudray has a free English-language version of his book ‘A Guidebook To Hidden Animals’ on his website:

This is very much NOT a book but one in the vein of - so lots of retro 60’s-ish . Some of the depicted are extremely obscure and outlandish, including the first to show up in this instance for me: one with a horn and flippers. And then there’s the monster of Lake Tanganyika…

The dream was definitely inspired by the / entry from Coleman and Huyghe’s Field Guide as well as Mark A. Hall’s super . Unlike modern these authors view such entities as regular old flesh and blood animals. How they could possibly remain as in an otherwise rational universe is truly mind-boggling. Hall at least thought there was a conspiracy of silence for inexplicable reasons.
