#Scotland is such a diverse wee country. The first photo is of the beautifully preserved village of #Culross, #FifePride . I just had to turn around to take the other picture, of the huge petrochemical complex at #Grangemouth, on the opposite side of the #FirthOfForth. Yet there is continuity, as the wealthy of #Culross made lots of money from #coal mining in the early modern period. Coal remained a major industry in the area into the 21st century

Enjoyed a nice little spin over to Culross this morning, with a walk along the riverside country park, then up to the Abbey after refreshment at The Biscuit Cafe. Surprised to discover some contemporary stained glass windows in such an historic building. Which made the trek up the hill worthwhile.

The slightly puzzling ruins of Culross Abbey, standing on a hillside above Culross in Fife. The abbey was founded in 1217 on a site that was believed to have been used for a monastery associated with St Serf and St Theneva in the 500s. First visit of 2023 to the path round the Lagoons between Culross and Low Valleyfield. Very cold but sunny, and tide high (unhelpful for birding). Best sightings: a Stoat running across the path in front of us, Great Crested Grebe feeding unfazed between shore and the line taken by huge vessels travelling to and from Grangemouth. Curlew calling, Ravens calling in woodland behind Culross, Reed Buntings and Larks on the open land. #scottishwildlife #scottishmammals #culross

Trying out a family history challenge this year called #52Ancestors involving a blog each week about an ancestor. This week my blog is on my 2 x gt gf John Scotland, Town Officer at #Culross , Fife. It involves a tale of emigration to the US & return. His family went on to serve the town in the role of Town Officer right up to 1974!!
Culross is better known today as a filming location for the television series #outlander.
