Got the replacement board in for the Dell Inspiron 11. Fits perfectly, except it's just a *hair* too short. I'll have to attach the WiFi adapter with some tape, since there isn't a spot for a hold down screw. I've done kludgier things in the past, I'm sure it will hold up fine!

Also, the board came without RAM, so I habe an 8GB stick on order. Added $18 to the project cost, but I'm mostly frustrated I'll have to wait.

Welcome to part 11 of the series on How to Fix a Hole in the Shed Floor. In this episode, we fix the hole in the #shed floor by adding a chandelier!

Added a plywood panel to hold the switch and things that need to be hung. Then I wired up the led lights so I can see on those dark winter nights. Ran the snow blower up and down the ramp a few times too. I plan to store as much as I can on dollies so I can move things easily around f I need to.

@Hawkwinter #Repairability even helps those that can't #DIY, as parts are cheap and even if technicians that fix it were way more expensive, they'd need far less time to turnover repairs and would have easy access to parts if not have them in stock!

For example, some cars until @EU_Commission mandated toolfree-swappable bulbs on newer models literally required uninstalling basically the entire front bodykit and sometimes even the radiator just to swap a faulty light bulb.

But instead of hoping for #regulation to work - which is #naive - the only winning move is to refuse to buy such #AntiRepairDesign and instead choose #repairability - like with a @Fairphone !

Because anything else will affirm said manufacturers that are #AntiRepair that you are okay with them denying you this essential #ConsumerRight to #DIY and #fix products you bought...

The #freezer #experiments for #diy excess #solar power usage/"storage" ("charge" salt water to ice during the day, let it melt during the night) continue. Today: duty cycle with dust, cleaned and currently running: 16x 120x120mm cooling fans. Theory: if the radiator stays 10°C cooler the compressor needs to work with 10°C less temperature difference = better efficiency / lower duty cycle.

Yay, I got the PCB connectors today. Even though I was tired I managed to solder the 2x13 pin connector for the display (it works!) and did some slight improvements to the audio breakout.

Now I'm pretty back to where I was when I managed to brick wifi and BT on the other raspi.

Next up is probably to figure out how to control display brightness with two physical buttons. Looks like easy low hanging fruit.

I should really figure out that damn on-off button though. Annoying as fuck.

While I wait for a replacement motherboard, I decided to do something about the laptop housing. It's not a *bad* color, but this machine has accumulated a lot of scratches and other damage.

I was originally going to prep the housing and do a gloss coat, but my girlfriend had some leftover bedliner from another project. I've seen this stuff survive all manner of impacts, and last after the metal of the truck bed rusted away.

Inspiron Tough Book, anyone?

My old Dell Inspiron 11 failed today - the dreaded 7 beeps indicating a motherboard/CPU failure. I'm going a step beyond just repairing this one by replacing the stock 3162 mobo with the newer 3180 mobo. This gives me:

A9-9420e (replacing N3050, newer/faster CPU)
8GB of DDR4 RAM (up from 2GB DDR3)
128GB of storage (up from 32GB)

This may be a usable travel laptop now! I'll throw a lightweight #linux distro on there too. Can't do anything about the blue though...

Next, I built up the doors, doors seem to take just as long as the shed to put together. It was the same way with the greenhouse. Day for the building, a day for the doors.
