The rise of streaming services, as was just pointed out by @fifilamoura ( https://eldritch.cafe/@fifilamoura/110707210945466851 ) has resulted in pitting studios against the tech industry.
Over the last 30 years it has seemed as if the entertainment industry and the tech industry both had endless supplies of money.
But now we're watching the birth of the #communityMedia revolution, the #DIYTV revolution.
This is exactly the kind of thing that I've been writing about at https://communitymedia.network
See, tech companies have grown to enormous, impossible sizes. Media companies have grown to enormous impossible sizes. Their only option for continuing to exist is to continue to grow, but the world is changing around them, and there are no new realms for them to conquer.
Alright, I've decided I want to build a #DIYTV set top box.
I'm prototyping.
I'm modeling the software after the first cable box I ever had. It was a very simple affair that just let you change channels with a remote.
Punch in some numbers, go to that channel. Press up or down, go to that channel.
You know, cable box.
Except instead of a cable box, it's a small single board computer. It's controlled over HDMI-CEC. Instead of cable, it specifically shows peertube livestreams.
Give each one a number, scroll through them with the up and down buttons. etc. etc.

Sneak Peak at a project I've been working on:
https://communitymedia.network/
This is a website with information about #DIYTV and #NewEllijayTelevision, a history of independent video from the #videofreex through to #youtube and suggestions on how to proceed in to the future.
It's still growing. There are almost certainly typos, formatting issues, dead links, awkward phrases, incorrect information, missing instructions, etc. Over the next week or three I'll be adding links, embedding videos, sharing code, and writing additional supplemental and instructional materials.
But the site is up and it works, and I have a page through which you can by a hand bound zine style copy of Community Media: A Handbook for Revolutions in DIY TV.
#DIYTV #newellijaytelevision #videoFreex #youtube
I started writing a summary of our goals for #diytv to publish as a pamphlet.
I'm about 1/3 through my outline and already around 30 pages.
I think I might be writing a book.
I just found this: https://mediaburn.org/video/appalachian-perspective/
I haven't watched it yet. I literally just discovered that it is publicly available seconds ago.
This is Broadside TV's Appalachian Perspective. A video that was eventually shown to congress and used as evidence that helped pass laws to limit strip mining in the united states.
This is what #DIYTV looked like in Appalachia in the 70s, and it is probably the most historically significant of the works Broadside TV produced.
I am floored that it's just sitting out on the internet, I've looked for it at several points in the past and been unable to find it, and I literally found it by accident today.
I'm writing a pamphlet on #DIYTV to hand out to people who are curious about what we're doing.
I'm trying to come up with a clever name for the thing. So far, what I'm realizing is that I'm far too earnest and sincere for clever names.
I've got "Community Television" "Communal Television" "Collaborative Video"
and "Small TV"
Do you have a better suggestion?
(and we need a better name than #DIYTV. Guerilla Television was almost a great name, but I think it carries connotations I don't want, and we have to differentiate ourselves from the people who were doing this 50 years ago.
My gut reaches for the word Open, but it (and the word Free, for the same reason and also for other semantic reasons) has been poisoned by the Open Source vs Free and Open Source argument.
It doesn't carry the implication of values. Open Television (or Free and Open Television) sounds like a direct extension of the FOSS world, and I intend so much more.)
So if you've been waiting on our official roku app to check out what #newellijaytelevision is all about, or you're hearing about it now for the first time and want to know more, please do check out what we've done so far.
Give us a review on the store, watch a bit of the live stream or one of our archives.

Now that this hurdle has been cleared, we should have a lot of new original material going up every few days.
#NewEllijayTV streams off a server in Bulgaria so ... It might not work well.
Ah well, it's #diymedia, and specifically #diyTV It doesn't have to work *well*, it just has to work.
#newellijaytelevision #newellijayTV #diymedia #DIYTV
Hey! Do you make videos?
Especially short films, Television style videos, or Music programs, but really any kind of news or entertainment videos.
New Ellijay Television's Roku app is under review right now, and we're getting ready for our first big promotional push (I'm going to be on the radio. I might be interviewed on television.)
I'm looking for independent, values aligned, original video productions to add to our VOD catalog and our live stream rotation.

I'm proud of this. I'm excited to talk more about it. I'm glad to share it with you all.
The cartoon is going to end up on #newellijayTV when it's ready.
We have a bunch of other #diyTV that we've been working on going up on #newellijaytelevision in the coming days.
It's time for me to write some blog posts.
#newellijayTV #DIYTV #newellijaytelevision
We've been making such good progress on #diyTV for #newellijaytelevision and I want to celebrate that.
When I talk about #diymedia and #diyTV, I'm revisiting these old conversations. I'm re-hashing decisions and designs and ideas from 50+ years ago.
More than that, really, but the 50ish years ago movement is what I'm studying at the moment. This playbook, this idea of co-opting available technology and using it to spread radical ideology, using it to educate, using it to build networks and power structures to rival and supplant those provided by corporations and/or the state, has existed for hundreds of years.
In the 1700s, it was a pamphlet. In the 1920s, it was a newspaper, in the 30s film, or a novel, or a comic book, or a radio broadcast.
We're just repeating patterns.
So this is what I'm going to do:
1) - I'm setting aside $10k of my own money to help finance software improvements to the #diyTV ecosystem. I'll discuss this more in the future, but if you're a developer looking to improve any of the issues mentioned up thread, we should talk.
2) - I'm pledging another $10k of my own money over the next 12 months to people who are making open content licensed video, especially narrative television.
3) - I'm pledging to write the guide I mentioned above (A guide to the technical side of #diyTV for creatives) and to host it on a dedicated domain which highlights technical and social solutions to the problems facing DIY Media, and reviews #creativeCommons and #publicDomain material
#DIYTV #creativecommons #publicdomain
I am looking for contributors to #newellijayTV
New Ellijay Television is a #Diymedia collective making #DIYTV in the north #ga mountains.
I need #writers #actors #editors #programmers and publicity people to help us pull this thing off.
We launch to the public on Nov 5th, but there's a lot of work to do before and after then.
If you want to help change the future of television, consider contributing to New Ellijay TV.
