Ich war heute mit Informatik-SuS (eAN) im Deutschen Klimarechenzentrum (#dkrz) in HH zu einem Vortrag mit anschließender Besichtigung des Rechenzentrums.

Was haben wir gelernt?

1) Auch als Geophysiker kann es passieren, dass du dein Geld mit Programmierung (Visualisierung z.B. mit #python ) verdienst.
2) Magnetbänder sind längst nicht tot und werden zur Archivierung verwendet.

Impressive achievement by the teams from #MPI, #DKRZ and #NVIDIA: Simulating the #NASA Blue Marble picture using the #DWD ICON weather model in 1km resolution. The state was initialized with the ERA5 reanalysis and very limited observations 🤯.

Und ihm war klar, dass Helmut Kohl ihn freundlich lächelnd in irgendeine Schublade im Kanzleramt packen würde und ansonsten ignorieren würde. Ich kann mich nicht mehr genau erinnern, was er gesagt hat, aber er war ziemlich sauer, was bei dem kleinen temperamentvollen Oberbayern sehr eindrucksvoll war.

Ich muss gerade in diesen Tagen oft an meine Studentenzeit in Hamburg und an Professor Grassl denken, und an einen Wutanfall Grassl's, den ich mal in den frühen 1990ern bei einer Doktorfeier im Keller des Geomatikums erlebte. In den oberen Stockwerken summten die neuesten US-Parallelrechner, die Millionen kosteten, Grassl hatte gerade mal wieder einen Forschungsbericht über Klimawandel im Kanzleramt abgegeben.
