#Cado, a sea god or sea demon of #Brittany, came to force the beautiful pagan princess #Dahut to live with him forever beneath the ocean waves. In the ensuing tumult, Dahut’s magnificent city of Ys was destroyed. Only king Gradlon was able to get away.

#Dahut, the last pagan princess of #Brittany, was sait to have taken scores of young men to her bed, each for a single night of bliss. Afterwards every nightly visitor would put on a mask to retrace his steps unseen. But the mask would grow tighter and tighter until it squeezed the very breath out of the unfortunate young man, after which a servant would haul the body to an abyss between Huelgoat and Pualoauen.

#Dahut, whose legend describes her murderous love for men, may have been a mermaid before being depicted as a princess, or the opposite may be true. In some parts of #Brittany it was said that all mermaids are daughters of Dahut.

Cado was a sea monster of Brittany who came to carry off princess Dahut, which resulted in the destruction of her city Ys. #FolkloreThursday

#Arianrhod was said to live surrounded by her maidens in her castle on the coastal island of Caer Arianrhod, which is also an idiomatic #Welsh name for the constellation called Corona Borealis. In that seagirt (or starry) realm, she lived wantonly, which suggests a parallel to the Breton figure of #Dahut.

Just off the the Llyn peninsular in Wales is a reef thought to be the stronghold of Arianrhod--lady of the silver wheel, goddess of the stars and fate.

With the help of the sea magicians called the Korrigans, the #Breton heroine or goddess #Dahut set about building the world’s most magnificent city. Behind great walls gleaming like gold magnificent homes rose within the new city of Ys. Probably the most splendid hall was the ballroom in Dahut`s palace. In one terrible night, as the horrified residents danced there on and on, they saw a mysterious unknown prince open the sluices of the great seawalls, saw the water begin to pour into the city, saw it rush into the ballroom and rise around their dancing feet, which were unstopable due to enchanted music.
Only king Gradlon survived the horrible flood that swallowed Ys.

#Celtic #Folklore: The city of #Ys in the Baie de Douarnenez could not stand against the elemental force of the sea. Supposedly King #Gradlon's daughter #Dahut, the last pagan princess of #Brittany, was responsible. The daughter of the mermaid #Malgven `was sait to have taken scores of young men to her bed, each for a single night of bliss. She then killed them & had theit bodies tossed over a cliff into the roaring sea or buried in a so called `purpose-built` pit in a bog. Her hair is said to have been the color of fire.` Patricia Monaghan
