#OTD John Stevens Henslow, British #Priest, #Botanist, & #Professor, is born.
A mentor to #Darwin, John recommended Darwin for the expedition on the HMS Beagle & gave him a #Book for the journey: "Humboldt's Narrative," which he inscribed:
"J. S. #Henslow to his friend C. Darwin on his departure from England upon a voyage around the world. September 21st, 1831."
Darwin treasured this gift above all others. After his death, the book was gifted to the #Cambridge #Library.

#OTD Charles #Darwin received a box of #Orchids.
After sorting the #Flowers, one #Orchid caught Charles' attention: the #Angraecum sesquipedale, commonly called Darwin's Orchid or the #Christmas Orchid.
Charles suspected an unknown moth w/ a 14-inch long proboscis co-evolved w/ the orchid to #Pollinate it. Many people scoffed - a moth with a 14-inch tongue?!
But, in 1903, such a #Moth was discovered.
21 years after Darwin's death, his guess was proved correct.

Syd died of #Cancer at the hospital where his dad, Max, was a doc.
Max instilled in Syd a love of #Gardening & he took Syd to the #Cambridge #Botanic Garden - a place he could access anytime thanks to his own set of keys.
Created by #Darwin's mentor, John Henslow, the garden's memorial bench to Syd features the first line from #JugbandBlues:
"It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here..."

She wrote,
"We #Admire the #Strange & #Brilliant #Plant of the #Greenhouse,
but we #Love most the #Simple #Flowers we have loved of old,
which have bloomed many a #Spring,
through #Rain & #Sunshine,
on our #Native #Soil."
