#Dionysos held by his wife #Ariadne, helping the drunk god walk. He holds a lyre in his hand, she what is possibly a tambourine. A little #Eros on the left side of the vase painting seems to be playing a smaller version of it. His presence symbolises their mutual love and attraction.

Did you know that #Dionysos was happily married? #Ariadne, sister of the Minotauros & lover of Theseus, ended up married to the god. The stories of how they got together vary. One account tells of them having a fling before Theseus even set foot on Crete and how Dionysos offered the starry crown of Corona Borealis in exchange for love's embrace.

Yesterday was the start of the #Lenaia, a festival dedicated to the god #Dionysos Lênaios that celebrated both his release from Zeus's thigh and his emergence from the Underworld. Its official name was "Dionysia at the Lenaion", a theatre and sanctuary in #Athens, where the festival dramas, both tragic and comic, were staged.

Here, the drunk god is supported by a #satyr friend on this 1st century CE Roman gem, a jet-black oval. In white low relief, a nude #Dionysos has his long, flowing robe only wrapped around his right leg, while his #satyr companion seems to wear a type of shorts or kilt. The satyr is also holding his thyrsos, a pinecone-tipped staff decorated with flowing ribbons.

A common misconception is that #Bacchus is the Roman name for #Dionysos. The Romans associated the #GreekGod Dionysos with their god Pater Liber, the "Free Father". Bacchus is actually just the latinised form of Dionysos' Greek epithet Βάκχος (Bakkhos), in turn a foreign loan word.

Yet another potential birthday for #Dionysos is 6 January because the pre-Islamic Arabian god #Dushara is associated with Dionysos:
"In the city of Petra [...] they sing the praises of Kore in the Arab tongue, calling her in Arabic Chaamou, that is, Maiden, and #Kore, and him who is born from her, Dusares."
According to Epiphanius of Salamis this takes place on the night of #Epiphany.
