I’m sorry this is long but I need to be heard and I’m about to lose all I have worked so hard for.
My name is Katy, I’m 26, no children, a proud member of the LGBTQ community, I live in Dayton Washington (a small close minded town in Eastern Washington). I have a beautiful fiance whom I have been so rudely ripped apart from by the homophobic sheriff’s department about a year ago due to negligence, bullying and a rookie sheriffs deputy that attempted to arrest my fiance off duty, without a badge, at gunpoint for a warrant of driving while suspended (misdemeanor charge) in a dark parking lot.
Dayton is an extremely small town and everybody knows everybody, what they do for a living, where they live etc etc, neither of us recognized this man who was clearly very angry. I asked for his badge at last 20 times as he was screaming to turn the car off while pointing a gun right at me. (Btw me and her have never had any priors let alone any violent ones). I was in my grandpa’s pick up truck and made the executive decision to leave. With my hands up I told him I as going to reverse now and leave and so I did.
I went home and called the cops explaining how I just was at the store and someone with a gun was saying he was an officer and I told them I drove away because he had no identification ( I’ve heard terrible stories about people posing as officers).
They had an officer come out and bring statement forms and before I could turn them in the next day, I was arrested.
Because of this, myself and my fiance are now part of a case where I have 29 pending charges for breaking the no contact order for being co-defendants for resisting arrest, rendering criminal assistance, and obstruction. Now mind you my grandfather is a retired state patrolman and officers when I was a child were my biggest advocates as growing up was rough. Now I shake when I see one.. I wasn’t trying to run from the police but I was trying to get out of an unsafe situation. Why else would I call the cops and tell them what happened immediately after if I really thought he was an officer???
Reminder: cops are supposed to de escalate situations not escalate them which he definitely escalated that situation.
Months later;
My home was raided due to the sheriff’s department going off of hearsay that my fiance was here in OUR home (she was at work, and also staying with her family). I’ve had to use all of my savings, help from my grandparents, and mother, from friends, agencies that offer temporary assistance, even to the point of having to sell my possessions to make ends meet and pay 10,000.00$ for an attorney to be able to keep my record clean of any charges, especially felonies. Now I’m at the point of almost losing my home and I can’t afford to pay 1st, last and a deposit to move into somewhere new. I’ve allowed “friends” to stay with me in attempts to get help with rent and other bills and end up being ripped off, robbed or out right used.
I’m trying to find a job, or some type of work to fulfill my duties as a young woman trying to make a life for my family that’s been torn apart, traumatized and bullied for being gay.
My name in this town has been dragged through the mud the past year and it’s only getting worse as I have been forced to basically beg for my God given rights, my civil rights, and help to be able to live inside my once happy, healthy safe home.
I’m behind on my rent 3 months at 750.00$ a month, behind on the electric, water sewer and garbage and I have a limited time before I have to actually move out. I’ve had warnings, notices and a long talk with my landlord about a grace period and am at my wits end with resources. I honestly need a little help, and am swallowing my pride and asking for it.
I really hate what this county has done to me and my life. All because they couldn’t admit their wrongdoings.
I even requested public records of thee dispatch calls that night and that rookie deputy wasn’t even issued a badge yet but in the public statement the sheriff so kindly put out after a “thorough investigation” he said he did have a badge and several other lies that I can and will prove with the audio I received. I will prove my innocence and hopefully the deputy and the sheriff will have consequences for their actions because a badge (which he never got issued yet even) does not grant you extra rights.
This fight is hard and I’m struggling so bad and mentally drained and I honestly don’t know how much more I can take. I’m tired. I shouldn’t have to live without my other half or be scared of living somewhere. I want to feel safe again.
Nov. 30. 2022 is pre trial
Dec. 1st is day one of trial.
It would go Into the 2nd but both sides will be busy so if need be it will have to continue in Jan.
We would have just done it in Jan without the pause but I refused to sign my right to a speedy trial waiver unless they lifted the no contact order since it’s already been a year.
I hate what has become of this harassment and the only explanation is because we are gay in a conservative town but I’m still human and I really am scared to be on the streets in the cold while I fight this fight I shouldn’t eve be having to fight in the first place
Please. Anything helps.
