Race to the bottom. Vicious cycle. More ads, fewer users, less ad revenue, more ads. Managers think they are being clever when they hide the ads and click bait. And now users have alternatives (searx, you.com, brave, duck) though some of them are giving up the fight after LLMs (neeva.com) and some people are building their own (using meilisearch elasticsearch pinecone etc - search.qary.ai).

Sometimes I feel it is kind of pointless to #degoogle my life since google has known me for more than one decade. #Google, #Facebook and a million other companies have my ID Card and all other type of personal information one can imagine, obviously including my usage data on these platforms. Does it make sense to ditch them when they have so much knowledge on me?

Is it pointless to #DeGoogle my phone but keep on using its stock ROM?

Wow that's interesting. Qualcomm smartphones with custom ROM, apparently, are sending requests to the domain and collecting plenty of data unknowingly to users. That includes list of software, mobile number country code and network, device model, its unique ID and even chip serial number.

Je viens de passer mon pixel 6 sous #GrapheneOS.
Pour l'instant l'expérience que j'ai avec est plutôt bonne. Mise à part 1 application qui ne fonctionnent pas même avec le système des services Google play sandboxed, tout fonctionne à merveille.

Finally did a #degoogle on my phone number!

You can use https:/jmp.chat and #cheogram (see fdroid) for a complete google voice replacement, which gives all the phone features and a #Federated #XMPP chat client for direct messaging.

I think XMPP chat/voice gateways for e2ee chat should be the standard in the Fediverse!

If you use Android, you can find lots of Fediverse-related apps and other free open source software on @fdroidorg, an alternative to Google Play which emphasises privacy and ethical software.

Also, some apps which cost money on Google Play are free of charge on F-Droid, such as Fedilab @apps. (This is because the app devs encourage people to use F-Droid.)

Due to Google's anti-competition roadblocks, it's slightly tricky to install F-Droid, but once it's installed it's very easy to use. It looks and works very much like a normal app store.

If you are comfortable using an APK file you can get it from F-Droid's website at https://f-droid.org
