The beautiful yellow #lichen Xanthoria parietina is resistant to #pollution and used as a #biomonitor for heavy metals and #nitrogen pollution. You find it often near agriculture because it looks for high nitrogen levels in the air.

The importance of deadwood.
This tÄ« kÅuka/cabbage tree was also doubling as what I think was a probably a kÅtare/kingfisher hotel.
Itās split in half now but the remaining trunk is still alive and growing strongly.

A huge dead #tree lay naturally fallen in the #forest today. It had been dead for many years and hollowed out by #mushrooms, #woodpeckers and other animals. There is a quiet dignity around its crown.
And vibrant life. Birds peck insects and small rodents seek shelter from the cold. The time of #soillife has come and that of #mosses and #lichens.

One of my favourite #fungi: Green Elf Cup, Chlorociboria aeruginascens (or aeruginosa, only distinguishable by the spores).
Look at bark-free #deadwood in humid places (often #oak) and search for bluish-green stains. This tiny #fungus contains the #pigment #Xylindein and colours #wood with its #mycelium. It was already considered a precious object in the #Renaissance for #marquetry.
