Catching up with activism for a users project my tiny charity got funding for.

It's amazing how variable the amount and quality of BSL information is on deaf/disability access and related issues. Some orgs (ACAS) have NONE. Others like Scottish ICO have quite a bit.

It's almost ALL hard to find and scattered/buried in random places.

I also suspect funding is better put into live support of BSL users than static video provision due to language needs and cultural preferences.

Great podcast interview about XR and accessibility. voicesofvr.com/1231-xr-accessi

Disclaimer: The guest, Joel Ward, is a relative, but I am not biased. I probably wouldn't have known about the ep if that wasn't the case, though. :)

I’ve recently had a few conversations about communication in sign languages.

At some point I learned in and was later told that it’s extremely close to fingerspelling in german.
I am fluent in both spoken languages, but I never had any training in the full language in either.

Now I am wondering how different ASL is from in regard to fingerspelling.

Could someone please enlighten me?

I feel like (allistic?) people and (hearing) people should be natural friends

Like nobody is going to be more honest and specific about what makes any kind of noise at all than Autistic people

But also nobody is going to teach someone about what facial expressions mean faster than a native user

One of my pet peeves is when NPR airs a repeat episode of a podcast but doesn't include a link to the transcript. Searching for the old transcript is not always easy which means the repeat episode is inaccessible to folks who are Deaf or hard of hearing.

My hearing's OK but due to cognitive issues it helps to read a transcript while listening.

Today I finally sent a comment to NPR so I'm sharing it (see reply) in case others want to send comments, too.

The sudden absence of interpreters—due to another payment snafu—left Deaf teachers in the lurch and brought back fights for that has felt like an afterthought

Learned a lot about and hard of hearing folks, you can too sfstandard.com/education/deaf-

I have a question for I'm a playwright. A producer is trying to cast a hearing terp in a role because it's specifically a "terp character", so they think it doesn't matter if we cast a Deaf actor. I am trying 6 ways to Sunday to explain to them why this is Not acceptable, that all ASL performance should be cast with Deaf performers, etc., but they are not listening. Does anyone have an article or other resource By a Deaf author I could send them?
