My interpretation of Cersei Lannister, for example, is far, far different from that of GRRM or D&D, because I refuse to base it solely on the text itself. I did a whole Twitter thread about that, and I'll recreate it here eventually. 5/5

I simply don't accept a cishet male author's statements about his female characters as "canon", especially when it comes to his female villains. I view it with the same type of skepticism with which I view a cishet man's account of his "crazy" ex-girlfriend. 4/5

A cishet male author has biases shaped by the misogynistic patriarchal culture that birthed him, reared him, and privileged him, and I expect those biases to manifest in his writing, especially with his female characters, so I view his words about them skeptically. 3/5.

These days, I always treat a cishet male author writing female characters, especially female villains, as if he were an unreliable narrator speaking from a perspective that has been filtered through the lens of his own biases, a voice that is neither objective nor omniscient. 2/5

In all seriousness, female characters written by cishet male authors are where I get the most Death-of-The-Authory in my consumption of fiction these days. 1/5

"Death of the author" is a literature analysis philosophy, not something you are owed to every artist to protect their works from their actions.

I’m wondering– how do other people feel about “death of the author?” I’m really not a fan of it– I think the author’s life + beliefs are typically very visible in their work, no matter how much you try to pretend they’re not. I see the “Emma Watson wrote Harry Potter” tweets as immature.
But I’m wondering how common this view is. What do you guys think?

"My" author died yesterday -- I feel so discombobulated.
dbaplanb.wordpress.com/2022/11
I wrote up an obit for my blog, posted his bio, sent condolences to two writers I met through him (now friends), but feel generally at a loss...
Have any of you dealt with this situation? I was so lucky to have worked with him, to have been able to ask questions, get his feedback... I heard he was working on another play. Sigh and sigh again...

I really wish Richard Morgan wasn't a TERF. Altered Carbon and trans-ness feel like they should mix well. But Richard Morgan supports She-who-shall-not-be-named, and I don't know how I feel about trying to reclaim it.

The thought of an Altered Carbon ouroboros tattoo would really symbolize my realization and re-birth of who am I am, but I don't know how to separate it from the author.

In the mid-80s Julian Barnes imagines a sort of Wikipedia sourced from all available human knowledge, run by what seems to be a Labour government intent on turning quote-unquote and into anonymous "source-providers" for the Machine...
