I happened to mention this work earlier today. I very much see the sort of simple intimacy with the mechanics of thought and experience that's inculcated in so-called "via negativa" contemplative traditions as a kind of #meditative #deconstruction.

I have some friends who went to a religious club university.

I went to a liberal arts college.

They were not allowed to argue with their professor.
They were not encouraged to build strong arguments to defend their point of view.
They did not get good grades if their papers didn’t agree with the professor.
They learned to listen, obey, and not question.

I had to argue for everything in college.
The smarter I disagreed the prof, the better I did.
I learned to use my noggin’

Today’s random reflection:
When I was a part of the #church (cult), we were told we needed to “act & do things that are different than what “society” wants us to do (sin).”

1. How manipulative that narrative was/is bc yt xtians are not oppressed in America.

2. I believe society wants us to be kind, empathetic, restorative, & to live in reciprocity so why would we go against that…

3. I’m a better person outside of the church than I ever was when I was in.

Back in my 0 to Jesus days, you weren’t a real #christian if you didn’t pick a word. (Ahem, if the Holy Spirit didn’t put a word on your heart.) Anywhodizzle, last year my word was “shalom” & I didn’t experience that up until the final week of Dec.

For 2023, I’ve decided my word is “me”. I’m choosing me in every way I can. Part of my healing and #deconstruction of #religion has been that I am not selfish nor loved any less for choosing me.

I am caring for me. I am worthy of me.
Here’s to me.
