I'm glad the 9th circuit threw out this lawsuit against journalists embedding Instagram posts, but it reveals how technologically clueless judges are when they approve a reuse because *nothing gets stored*. Honey, every time you see a digital image it's stored on your device.

Turns out the archives community has been doing it right all along. A new paper shows that neural networks with parameters and training and all can be beat by something as dumb as gzip, the lowly algorithm that (among other things) compresses this web page on its way to your screen.
