There is a difference, if a #diplomat was sent to a #court as a permanent representative or on a short mission or if he attended a #peacecongress or an assembly of the estates, such as the #Reichstag.

A #court was built around its prince as a ceremonial, political and cultural centre. A #peacecongress lacked such a centre. This influenced the functioning of the ceremonial, the procedures, the sociability, and, thus, #emdiplomacy (2/x)

123 years ago #otd Chiune Sugihara was born. A Japanese #diplomat who served as vice-consul for the Japanese Empire in Kaunas, Lithuania.

During the Second World War, Sugihara helped thousands of #Jews flee Europe by issuing transit visas to them so that they could travel through Japanese territory, risking his job and the lives of his family.

In 1985, the State of Israel honored Sugihara as one of the Righteous Among the Nations for his actions.

As the US #Ambassador to #Mexico, Joel came across a #New #Plant & sent it home to #SouthCarolina. #Botanists first called the plant #Mexican #Fire plant. Today it is known as the #Poinsettia.

The #Botanist Karl Wilenow named the Poinsettia the Euphorbia pulcherrima. Pulcherrima means "very beautiful."
