The way that Occidental Petroleum is building direct air capture plants in order to create social permission to keep on extracting fossil fuels is fundamentally backwards:

The reality is that we need to be cutting fossil fuel use to approximately zero so that this kind of CO2 removal program can make a meaningful difference:

Climeworks' Orca plant in Iceland has a state goal of removing 4000 tonnes of CO₂ every year. Does anyone know what it actually removed in 2022?

Here's an article from April 2022 that said Orca was behind schedule in CO₂ removal because Iceland is cold (who knew?)

We have to, have to, figure how to remove carbon from the air and ocean. Just growing trees and other carbon sinks, while vital, is not enough.

The burning of fossil fuels has introduced a massive quantity of "new" carbon. It needs to be removed.

requires a lot of energy, but maybe if we make the transition to clean renewables fast enough, we can run these processes and be carbon negative.

" is currently categorized as “technology readiness level” 6 (on a scale of 1 to 9), meaning it’s still in the large-scale and prototype phase, not yet ready for full commercial deployment. But this also means there’s ample opportunity to improve performance and reduce costs through learning from early iterations of the . "

@redoak I think decaying plant matter actually releases carbon back into the atmosphere.

After some research it looks like the word I was thinking of was .
