I really wish I could be at #ISMBECCB2023 in Lyon this week, but I'm really in no shape to attend a conference in person and registering virtually was the right decision. I'll be attending a few talks from the quiet of home, between lie-downs. I'm glad ISCB made such an effort to have a hybrid event, without which I could not participate at all. #DisabledInSTEM
As part of #DisabledInSTEMWeek, I'm happy to announce the first ever #DisabledInSTEM merch! This is my first time doing this so I'm excited to continue to expand in the future!

the HUGEST shout out to my Chem professor and p much all the rest of my Bio professors though.
Chem professor had a brother w/ I/DD and really worked with me to help me do my best. Subtlely too. never made it a big deal.
i have issues with focus and she would just walk by a tap my desk to signal me to zone in, for example. she's a total inspiration for me.
the school staff also rocked. and helped me put pressure on admin. I advocated for accessibility for them too.
there was another a year after me w/ CP but not the same cognitive effects, and she also had to fight hard.
I had to get a B.A, in Bio instead of a B.S. because the physics professor thought accommodations were unfair and refused to implement mine. the school did not take action on my behalf. (though he was fired later, too late for me. p sure bc a white rich student i knew used her status to get him gone)
the best i could do was force them to let me do an independent study
i went into college and made a few friends with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. I am sure they were more people with less "significant" cognitive disabilities but i'm talking, you notice it when you speak to us/more cognitive challenges type beat.
in my little I/DD STEM co-hort, I was the only one to graduate.
i did have allies on staff to help me get the supports I needed, but I also had to threaten further action to get my degrees.
yes, my journey to get to where i am today was difficult.
i graduated with my degrees in Biology and Public Health in 2020 and started undergrad in 2015.
my college was small, private, women's college. this was great due to the small class sizes, a must for accessibility to me, but it had drawbacks in what they were required to do accessibility wise.
i had to fight for damn near everything. down to the point of marching students to to occupy the presidents office.
For question #4 of #DiSWeek23 we're asking about self-care!
If you haven't thought about self-care for a while, take this as a sign to schedule some into your week! Get inspired by the ideas of others! #DisabledInSTEM #SelfCare

That may actually complicate accessibility for the presenter and they might want to say "no" if they know that instead of doing a direct presentation over Zoom or similar videoconferencing app, they'll be submitting a deck that will be operated remotely by someone else, getting questions where they can't interact with the questioner, etc. All of this info should be coming up front with the invitation to speak, in order to be fully informed about accessibility. #DisabledInSTEM
I'd like to suggest to conference/event organizers that using highly-orchestrated outsourced event organizing services is an accessibility issue. That is, taking the presentation out of the direct control of the presenter is something that should be mentioned up front when inviting someone to speak. It is an important part of accessibility criteria. #DisabledInSTEM @academicchatter

Inspired by #MedTwitter and graciously given the form, here's a good way to stay connected with the #DisabledInSTEM community as platform changes happen!

These events are made to highlight the disabled individuals in each field.
I ask allies to amplify these voices and learn from the unique experience and perspective each person has. I'm really looking forward to connecting the #DisabledInSTEM community through this week and year-long! Thank you all for the support! #DisabilityTwitter

Happy to announce the inaugural #DisabledInSTEM week, which I planned to be part of #DisabilityPrideMonth! #DisabledInSTEMWeek
For Tuesday through Friday, I am focusing on each individual letter of STEM. I will be featuring a few people that fits these fields along with discussion questions about each field. People in these fields are invited to answer at their convenience and share their experiences.
