Earthquake (1974) has everything that I love in a 70s disaster movie. If I wanted to explain the genre to someone I'd say go see Earthquake. Plus it has Chuck Heston. And it still looks cool. With no CGI!

Rollercoaster (1977) gets lumped into the disaster movie genre but it's really a suspense thriller, and a very good and very exciting one. It's about a brilliant evil extortionist who targets amusement parks, especially the rollercoasters.

I love 70s disaster movies but The Hindenburg (1975) doesn't quite come off, despite some interesting ideas. Since it was a real disaster so we know exactly what's going to happen it tries to focus on why it might have happened.

The Cassandra Crossing(1976) leads you to believe it’s a certain type of movie then it switches gears and becomes a whole different movie.

It’s an action adventure movie that is also a 70s disaster movie, and a 70s paranoia movie.

It's very silly. It’s also fast-moving and action-packed. Just don't think about it too much. Fun in a spectacularly bad 70s disaster movie way.

We are watching Meteor (2009) because we felt like a disaster movie tonight. And oh my this is a disaster. Some really improbable scenarios and several good actors doing the best they can in the situation. But on the plus side, explosions! Heroics! And Michael Rooker!

The Towering Inferno (1974)

Christmas was always the season of the blockbuster on TV, and this is the big daddy of the disaster movies. A stellar cast, great script, bloody long, and a few too many plot holes if you know anything about buildings and construction to make you feel a bit like the Smash aliens. Chamberlain makes a great villain, and Astaire proves his acting chops.

The Night My Number Came Up is a 1955 Ealing Studios production and it’s one of those odd little movies that they don’t make nowadays (and more’s the pity). A kind of semi-paranormal vaguely supernatural psychological suspense aviation thriller.

It starts with a dream about a plane crash.

And it's superb.

1950s U.S. sci-fi cinema gave us giant killer ants, giant killer spiders and other assorted giant killer critters. The Monolith Monsters (1957) is the killer rocks movie. Killer rocks from outer space, to be precise.

It sounds like a bad idea but it's actually a very good slightly offbeat movie, as much a disaster movie as a sci-fi movie.

Ah…. Airport. The film that helped to spawn the 70s disaster movie explosion. Not quite the star studded cast that later ones had, but with Lancaster, Dean Martin and Jacqueline Bisset it had quite a few. It’s still a great film, but you can’t help but notice all the scenes shamelessly stolen in years later. But it’s a gem of a Christmas holiday staple and one I love to revisit.

@zinn @emilyherring omg Emily I have a whole collection of 70s on my media hard drive! Top favs are Airport and Towering Infernero. Earthquake and Poseidon Adventure are also “good”. Avalanche is… well yeah it’s definitely a movie. Lol. Ah the sweaty orange all-star casts and preposterous “plots”!

Mum likes disaster movies, so we are now watching Tornado Warning, starring Jeff Fahey... I think that tells you everything you need to know.
