For news organisations, there are three non-evil reasons to put time and money into open or semi-public servers.

* Creating, recreating, or moving off-platform existing discussion forums.
We really want people to talk about our news, but doing that on our sites is hard.
Stuff like #Disqus tries to solve the problem of having a high-walled garden, but guess what, we don't like handing engagement over entirely to someone else either. Mastodon offers a neat hybrid.
