Does reduction of #seed #dormancy during ex situ cultivation affect #germination and establishment of #plants reintroduced into the wild?

Interesting @JAppliedEcology paper by Ensslin et al. exploring this for Digitalis lutea. They show this can apply and can negatively affect outcomes. They conclude plant material from wild populations is best suited for #restoration, but perhaps another option may be to regularly refresh ex situ cultivations with wild source material?

Seed dormancy is not only a *bet-hedging* strategy (eg, in unpredictable environments), it can also be a *best-bet* strategy, eg in fire-prone environments!
