If only there was another way of looking at our use of natural resources...
@TomSwirly @Simon318ppm @foresterr @graydon
Agreed, implementing #DoughnutEconomics would be a great step forward.
From the thought experiment perspective I would still ponder some corner cases:
@TomSwirly @foresterr @graydon
It's an interesting thought experiment whether optimizing for such wellbeing measures would yield a stable system, or would it eventually end in collapse similar to that of the mouse utopias from the 60s.
Moreover, combatting hunger, violence, sickness or overwork without fossil fuels would be significantly harder, so would such a system be able to prevent #ClimateChange? I think we'd need a framework of hard environmental limits like in #DoughnutEconomics.
#DoughnutEconomics #climatechange
@herdsoft Interesting. That's not how I interpret the graphs at all.
The story I get from them is that our current economic system is heavily dependent on fossil fuels. Perhaps even that economic growth as measured by GDP came mainly from fossil fuels. Therefore it could be concluded that the idea of "green growth" is flawed and it's impossible to decouple, at least at the timescales necessary (net zero by 2050). Therefore we need a different paradigm, e.g. #DoughnutEconomics via #degrowth.
@EricLawton Wouldn't a progressive income tax be necessary as well though? Or perhaps a very high tax on high-carbon luxuries, like flying or red meat?
Pretty much everything we do in society requires fossil fuels, so it's a tricky thing to implement. Do it badly and you end up with something like Yellow Vests protests.
A new framework for the economy would be necessary, like #DoughnutEconomics, as I feel the problems go much deeper and cannot be solved by slapping a tax on the current system.
Looking for anyone interested in #DoughnutEconomics. Iβm following Kate Raworth on here, but canβt see any of her toots for some reason.
"If all people are to lead a good life within planetary boundaries, then our results suggest that provisioning systems must be fundamentally restructured to enable basic needs to be met at a much lower level of resource use. These findings represent a substantial challenge to current development trajectories."
#DoughnutEconomics #beyondgrowth #degrowth
"Physical needs such as nutrition, sanitation, access to electricity and the elimination of extreme poverty could likely be met for all people without transgressing planetary boundaries. However, the universal achievement of more qualitative goals (for example, high life satisfaction) would require a level of resource use that is 2β6 times the sustainable level, based on current relationships."

Time to change "current relationships" then!

A great conversation between Kate Raworth and Nate Hagens, highly recommended!

Dubbed βThe Whipβ this Banksy is on Coney Island Avenue in New York City. It's a brilliant yet depressing representation of the way folks are being manipulated by the system, or rather the top 1% who created and feed from it.
What we need is #DoughnutEconomics https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doughnut_(economic_model)

@CelloMomOnCars I'm not saying we shouldn't stop fossil fuel extraction, we definitely should! It's just that it's not correct to assume that only the rich will lose in that situation. A global recession is an outcome that should be expected and managed. Which is the whole point addressed by the proponents of #degrowth or #DoughnutEconomics.
@SocialCommentaryBot There are so many excesses of modern life that are in no way related to wellbeing. We could live perfectly happy lives without planes, private cars, industrial animal farming, same-day delivery, every product wrapped in plastic, and so on. In fact, we could get rid of these things and improve people's lives in the process. That's the whole premise behind #degrowth and #DoughnutEconomics.
I'll be listening to Prof. Kate Raworth talking about #DoughnutEconomics (and other things) with Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart this afternoon while I'm trying to hide from the heat...
Just started reading Kate Raworth's book, "Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist" to learn more about economic models that AREN'T based on unsustainable growth βΒ and was surprised to discover that the City of Nanaimo (on Vancouver Island here in BC) has officially based its official community plan on the model of Doughnut Economics.
Go Nanaimo!!

The current "permanent growth" based economic systems are all divisive and wasteful; we must find ways that are inclusive and use our limited resources in more thoughtful ways.
Time for change: #DoughnutEconomics
@theaardvark Until the BoE (and UK Govt) stop employing people whose only experience of business is drawing theoretical graphs, there is no chance of the UK economy stabilising.
People need shelter & food.
Making those things more expensive to reduce personal expenditure doesn't work. It just DOESN'T F*CKING WORK. It just makes the rich richer; and for what?
Tax the billionaires. Put /that/ money back into circulation. Watch the economy recover.

Today weβre launching Cities & regions: letβs get started, a guide for anyone working alongside local or regional gov't who is inspired by #DoughnutEconomics and wants to better understand how to start putting them into practice in their own place. (1/4)
@ScotInTraining Whereas... There's a school of thought which says that whatever money is created by a government (& they do create money) should be kept moving through society by means of trade; excessive accumulation of money by individuals or corporations should be taxed & returned to the economic system.
In this way, no one should have too little & no one too much.
The upper and lower limits should be set by government; who in turn should represent the views of society.
