Who else is a fan of Len Lakofka? My new blog post hits some of the highlights of his experiences with the early days of the hobby including his contributions to Dragon Magazine and some history on L3 Deep Dwarven Delve.

@rdonoghue I know that my copy of the magazine departed when I was once doing a clear-out - the consolation being that I have TSR's marvellous and more compact CD-ROMs with issues 1-250, so I still have that slice of gaming history at hand (although I don't remember if those PDFs include pull-out features like this Deck of Many Things or the occasional boardgames).

@rdonoghue But TSR already gave away a Deck of Many Things as a pull-out in 148 (Aug 1989) - aren't they worried they saturated that market... 24 years ago? ;-) (Hang on, I mean 34 years ago, I'm apparently old...)

Best of the Dragon! Let's take a look at the third issue of Best of Dragon Magazine. These great issues took the very best articles, classes, and spells and put them together for easy reference.

Does anyone still use back issues for inspiration?

Here's some text from the back of the book.

Some of the most popular articles and features ever to appear in DRAGON® Magazine have been "buried" in out-of-print issues - until now.

The Issue 3 Print Proof files have been uploaded. Awaiting approval from DrivethruRPG. Once it's given, I can order the print proof. Once it arrives, I can release the print version (I don't make any profit from it - you just pay the base print and postage cost). :)

My collection of , all originals purchased when I was a teen. I scrimped and saved my pocket money to get the next issue lol. I loved these magazines, not just for the articles, but for the cool comics in the back - Snarfquest being my favourite. Dragon is a major influence for my own magazine, which you can download for free from .

What magazines from your youth influenced you in your DMing or game making?

Back in the early 2000s I scanned in the Wormy comics from my collection of 70s and 80s Dragon Magazine issues. I have the complete run of the comic, from its first appearance to its abrupt truncated conclusion.

For some reason it's always this time of year, when the days first turn warm and the world is waking up from its long sleep, that I remember this nostalgic gem and revisit these stories from my youth.
