My thoughts on #DuckDuckGone :
All non-open-source search engines are "black boxes", you should assume they are full of paid-for bias of various sorts, that is their business model.
Same goes for algorithmic social-media timelines, Youtube search etc.

So the #DuckDuckGone trend is people getting mad that a search engine is filtering out lying results? What do these people use search engines for that this is a problem?

Yes, it's politically left and I should be aligned with the decision, but sometimes privacy advocate's political ideology align with the right. Honestly, I see both side's arguments.

Philosophically, promotion is the same as censoring. If you could only choose 100GB of the 300GB English Wikipedia, that choice is the inverse of denying 200GB.

So the question becomes: "How should search engines sort results". Not "Should".

The idea of a search engine is in itself 'sorted'. An unalgorithm'd search engine would be... what? first-come-first-serve? Even that is a algorithm. What does it mean to "curate content" in a sequential fashion?

Even Mastodon uses an algorithm; the simplest one there is. Sequential post order (on the global/instance feed).
