St. Leonard's Well, Dunster. The lane up to it was very wet even after some time without rain. It is very green!

A small 14th or 15th century building stands over it but the water is not now used. The well may have been the water supply for Dunster Priory and also may have filled the arched water-trough in the south wall of the churchyard there. It is mentioned in deeds of 51 Edward III and 14 Henry IV.

Walkers are Welcome Town - Dunster

Dunster is probably the best preserved medieval village in England with its cobbled streets and historic buildings including Dunster Castle, the Tithe Barn and ancient Yarn Market. With its location being within Exmoor National Park there are hundreds of miles of waymarked paths to explore, both linear and circular starting from the village.

I’ve finished transcribing the #Dunster burials 1837-1914. I’ve added extra columns for cause of death, who registered the death, notes, relatives, even the officiating minister! Useful for tracking vicars. Need to transcribe the death certs, which will give me some real insights into the illnesses people lived with & died of. Here are a few immediate observations:

Having avoided it for a week or so since I did this video, I tried it again yesterday and it was fine. Some shingle on the path, but passable.

@StoneScrubber I think your methodology will depend on your goals for your #OnePlaceStudy. For me, I want some insights into what life in the village of #Dunster was like when my family lived there. Who were their neighbours, friends, employers, shopkeepers etc. I’m reconstructing families. I’ve transcribed censuses to get a picture of ages, gender, birthplace & occupations. I’ve looked at agriculture & healthcare. I’m working out who lived in which house. Your study, your rules!
