Does anyone have resources on #handDying yarn/fiber? Beginner tutorials, tips and tricks, things you wish you knew when you started?
I'm working on my first #handSpun #knitting project and I don't like the off-white color of the fiber; but #DyeingYarn seems really overwhelming? I don't know where to start!
Is there a kind #handDyer out there with a minute to spare to point a newbie in the right direction? Please info dump at me š„ŗ

Remember that last bowl of yarns stuck in the leftover snow/dye melt water?
I put some extra acid in and have left them on the counter for quite a few days, and the water is almost clear. Look at how the colours separated on the yarn I'm heating it now and I'll leave it out until I've got time to rinse it tomorrow, but it looks pretty nifty!

Today's kid experiment was a hideous mix of water, vinegar, salt, sugar and
food colouring. When he was done taste testing it (only the dog thought it was worth a second sip), examining vials under different lighting conditions, and recording his observations about how the dye moved around, I gave him some mini yarn skeins to try in it.
Here they are a few hours later! The purpler/pinker one is non-superwash, the bluer one is superwash. Pretty impressive how different they look despite being in the same dye bath! šš

Snow dyeing experiment #2! I actually washed these out today but they weren't dry before I ran out of good light, so here's some intermediate step photos.
The last one is a couple of skeins in the leftover water from the pans below (with extra citric acid added). I'll decant that one tomorrow.
Kiddo saved the rest of the melted snow-dye in a big apple juice bottle and used it for some other non yarn experiments today with baking soda and a paint brush and soap among other stuff. š§āš¬
#Fiberuary folk -- I'll try to have some mending tomorrow, but this was definitely a time limited opportunity. āļøāļøāļø

And the final yarns from the first snow dye! āļø
The darker two in the lower left are the ones that were inside the snowballs: the dark patches come from being immersed in the puddle after the melt.
The next four were in the other pan and their puddle wasn't as dark. The two in the upper right are non-superwash and the colours mixed and softened on them to be more peachy and pastel.
The two in the lower right are superwash and got a mix of intense saturated colour and some more gentle de-saturated colours depending on the snow melt. They're also a lot more messy looking because my kid shook them a little extra vigorously while getting the water out. šŖļø
All of these used 10g minis from knit picks in various bases. (They're my favourite for kid art because I'm not stuck detangling a full skein, plus they go on sale for a dollar.)
I'm pretty pleased with how these turned out!

Snow dyeing experiment #2 with my kid! This time we've pre-soaked the yarns and put them (and the snow) on a rack so the snow and colour can drip down. We're using food colouring rather than drink mixes so I sprinkled some citric acid on top so it would "stick" to the yarn better. (It's leftover from our bath bomb making experiments some months ago.)
Dye intermediate step: after the melt!
I could have heated these in the trays but I wanted to preserve the uncolored parts and there's a lot of dye left, so I pulled them out and put them in the microwave to heat set instead.

Snow dyeing experiment! āļø
There are some yarn minis under all that. We'll see what we get!

Tea overdyed yarn! This is something I can actually picture myself wearing on my feet on days when Iām teaching and need to look at least like Iām cosplaying a grown-up. #knitting #knitters #DyeingYarn @fiberarts

More kid art. These are using the dye remaining from some experiments with ice cubes and salt. Kiddo's drying process involved a lot of tossing them in the air, stomping on them in a towel, then putting them in the salad spinner. Sadly he's not quite as interested in detangling them. š
Yesterday's yarns! The ones my kid dyed are on the right, and they absolutely look like the yarns he wanted to buy the last time we went into a yarn shop, particularly the red/rainbow-y one. Kiddo loves the vibrant variegated stuff. (And soft!)
Not sure how they're going to look for @knitting but kid is gonna have some fun mitts ... Once I actually untangle these.
Look, it may look like some of those mini skeins are really tangled, but you have to understand that my kid needed to build a replica of the islands from Bowser's Fury in the sink and sometimes a mess must be made in the name of art.

Today in #KidArt (and #FiberArts) -- attempting speckles with drink mix powders and mixing drinks with the leftovers.
Probably won't get tiny speckles because kiddo didn't want to work over direct heat, but we had some fun and made some pretty yarns and fruity smells.
