#Birding
Ran the #Merlin sound ID app this a.m. as I had my coffee in the garden on a beautiful late summer morning. Only robins really singing now but quite a few calls. Bit surprised by marsh tit as not seen these in the immediate vicinity, though have seen them elsewhere in Hampshire this year. Didn't detect the house martins chirruping overhead - local flock of about 30

I'm usually more boring and objective than this, but part of me thinks the veritable invasion of #American #Flamingos in the #US this week is them paying respects to #JimmyBuffett.

Love and luck to #Floridians today.
Meanwhile in the Plains we've had quite a flight of southbound #migrants overnight. #BirdCast #migration #eBird #radar #birds #birding #ornithology #aeroecology #Oklahoma #wildlife

I signed up for this site last year so it’s about time I actually started using it! A bit of an #introduction. I am an #ornithologist who works on #phylogenetics #taxonomy and #macroevolution. These days mostly with #suboscine birds. I love working with and contributing to citizen/community science databases like #iNaturalist and #eBird. Follow along for wildlife photography and science content!

@NovaNaturalist @alexwild Oh, absolutely! I didn't mean to downplay the importance of amateurs in natural history. They've always made important contributions.
With tools like #iNaturalist and #eBird, I'd argue that they're making bigger contributions to natural history knowledge than ever, at least at an observation level.
The scarcity of professionals has the regrettable flow-on effect of students not seeing this as a viable career path and universities teaching few in-depth taxon courses.
Heard a Nighthawk out my window. Wasn’t sure if I was right, so I checked #ebird. Turns out there are two other sightings right near my house.
Good enough for me.

I can't even get a listing based on the city I'm in, but if I attempt to get a full listing, for the whole of Sweden, I land like this:

Casey does such a great job of prompting good questions but then letting me babble.

Super proud of our #pasopacifico team and the many collaborators who helped record at least 317 bird species and making 79 birding lists during #GlobalBigDay outings all across Nicaragua. #ebird

I have lost count how many times I've "lost" my phone because it was in a window with the Merlin app recording birds.

I didn't realize it beforehand, but this morning's short walk in the wet was my 500th all-time eBird list. 485 of those 500 have been right here in Oregon, and that seems right for me. As much as I like seeing new birds in new places, I'm a homebody at heart. I'd rather know one place than visit a hundred.
Led these nice folks on a #PayneCountyAudubonSociety field trip to #PawneeLake in #Pawnee, #Oklahoma for the #GreatBackyardBirdCount.
The #BlackVulture roost was the biggest surprise, but as is often the case, the #BaldEagles demanded the most attention.

On this weekend's #GBBC (great backyard bird count), I am enjoying a morning of #SlowBirding, where you appreciate and study the "mundain" species found near your home. (Kind of the opposite of "twitching.")
22 species this morning, but still patiently waiting for that Carolina Chickadee that I know is out there somewhere. The eastern bluebirds are quite comfortable with me sitting here, 2 meters away, while they grab the mealworms I've set out for them.

In honor of the Great Backyard Bird Count #GBBC https://www.birdcount.org/ from Feb. 17-20, I'll post some photos of #Birds I've taken in the past and maybe some new ones over the next couple of days!
