@yakkoj Any "bright theme" is eye-straining, unless it's an #eInk or #transflective screen read in sunlight...
I'm looking to upgrade my e-reader. I've been a long-time Kobo user and; I like their readers and I have a fairly substantial library through them, but I'm not a fan losing the microSD slot.
On the other hand, Boox has some intriguing options and a color e-ink option, but I've heard that they're more of a tablet than an e-reader.
And I'm also a little disappointed that there are so few options out there for e-readers and e-ink devices in general.
@shine *nodds in agreement*
As is #DarkMode...
Personally, I think all #apps and #programs should be legible on #eInk screens [yes they do exist], Braille Screens and monochrome terminals [Amber/Green on Black]...
Also offering bright and dark modes on basically any website and app doesn't require much more than a toggle and two CSS files...

This weekend's project was to roll my EInk reader with an Inkplate 6PLUS. It's a little chunky, but with a KleverCase cover, it becomes a nice little book.

It was process, but we got there. Turns out at pretty much every decision point, I chose wrongly!
Now it's working. The display has an STM32 driving it, attached to a CAN bus. To update the display, a python process (eventually to be run on raspi) renders the frame and uses a USB CAN adapater to send raw pixel updates to the display.

@mergesort I'm a chemist who works on electrophoretic display technology, and the joke in our labs is that if we'd had any idea how hard this was going to be, we would never have got started. 😂

📚 read #eBooks on a #eInk tablet, #reMarkable how close the experience is to a regular book, had to remind myself to swipe in order to flip the page 🤨
@la_marteau @evanpeterjones @bookstodon that's because the #Glowlight is in fact an #electrolumiescent layer likely on top of the #eInk screen layers itself.
Thus it mimics light shining onto paper very well, since it's not a CCFL or rather LEDs shining from the side onto it.

@ronsboy67 @HepCatJack @LadyOzma @bookstodon @ladymondegreen @evanpeterjones *nodds in agreement* tri- or even heptachromatic #eInk screens are still scarce and unless one optimizes the display routine or the file itself to use only the available colours, dithering occurs...
Not to mention that eInk was never intended for anywhing beyond crisp text. #Mirasol and espechally #PixelQi do images far better...
@HepCatJack @LadyOzma @bookstodon @ladymondegreen @ronsboy67 @evanpeterjones not to mention #eInk readers if done right will only consume power when one flips a page or otherwise interacts, providing them battery runtimes in weeks or months at regular reading speed - if not measured in pageflips - even from the tinyiest of LiPo cells...
More #eInk #amazon Kindle Scribe reviews “absolutely adequate”. Meh, hoped for a little better: https://www.theverge.com/23484927/amazon-kindle-scribe-e-reader-notetaking-pen-review
"Wyldcards are small plastic cards with e-ink screens (like a Kindle). When placed onto a plinth, the image on the card can be changed by a hidden computer. The cards also contain a memory chip, so they can store stats, moves, and keep changes and status effects from one game to the next. Plug your plinth into your friend’s and play against them."
Ooh, I like this concept very much.

Left my ereader off the charger while traveling for 10 days, and the battery is still going strong. Gotta love #EInk!
