The most recent Podcast I produced for EMBO was with Pavel Tomancak (and EMBO's Thomas Lemberger). One detail that might get missed in a wide ranging conversation about science, policy, science fiction and more was Pavel's passing comment on how one important consideration in his decision to return to Europe after a very productive time at UC Berkeley were serious reservations about the US healthcare system.

One of the things Thomas Lemberger and I discussed with Pavel Tomancak on this episode of the was how we should reward peer review. Pavel's answer was very direct: pay the reviewers.

@NicoleCRust It's great if people can do research and are great communicators. But it should not be assumed, or required, to be the case in my opinion. A lot of funders are just tossing in mandates for SciComm in grants that I think are very inappropriate. We discussed this a bit on the with Maria Leptin & Fiona Watt (after min 24) embo.org/podcasts/i-learned-ea

Oded Rechavi: “There are a few open questions that are very big, like can epigenetic inheritance, which is typically transient, affect the process of evolution.”

For Throwback Thursday, an episode with Akiko Iwasaki at the start of Covid year 2 (2021). We talked about the pandemic of course, but a lot more. Including her Immunology course at Yale.

"Ruslan (Medzhitov) and I have worked together to construct a course of introductory for medical students over the last several years. We wanted to approach immunology from first principles, not throwing some CD numbers and IL-whatever at the students, but really starting form how the system is established, how it works, what detection systems there are, and the arsenal of immune effector functions that are used to fight infection."

From 12/21: I spoke with Harmit Malik on the about how he got started, mobile genetic elements, genomic defences, and (with @tlemberger) preprints.

"Just like many other important transitions in life, I think my transition from chemical engineering to biology was chaperoned by a fantastic mentor.
(...)
He made even dry topics seem very interesting - but when he was teaching about the Lac operon and the basic fundamentals of molecular biology I was completely transfixed. It became something that I felt I could not pass up the opportunity to see if this is something I could spend the rest of my career on."

In a recent commentary in Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology, @Odedrechavi & Pavel Tomancak present some ideas on how to credit the work of co-authors on publications - essentially how to figure who did what, now that it is not unheard to see papers with three or more joint first authors (and senior authors as well).

The issue matters, of course, for research assessment and career progression. Bernd Pulverer and Thomas Lemberger discussed some alternatives beyond simple authorial credit, making use of emerging tools. You can listen to our conversation at the link below.
