Blue Ring Octopus are famous for their venomous bite and their vibrant color. Despite their large personalities, they are small in stature. The fourth image below shows the octopus next to a regular-sized marble. It was a delight to watch this species flash its colors, walk around the sea floor, and even interact with a nearby fish.

Dumaguete Day #1 is in the books and wow did we have some awesome critters to kick things off. The stars today were the ribbon eels (we saw 3 on the middle dive), the many species of shrimp, crabs, and anemonefish covering every anemone, and the two species of mantis shrimp we spotted on the last dive.

After brutal conditions on our last dive, we were very happy with 15 foot viz and only minor surge. I started out testing the 60mm + diopter on some sand shrimp and hermit crabs, eventually moving onto grubbies and a few zebra lebbid shrimp. The find of the day was the frosty white nudis my buddy spotted. They were on the move and stood out nicely on their red seaweed backdrop.

This was dive #2 with the 14-42mm kit lens + diopter, so I knew what I was in for this time around. It was kind of quiet underwater, but we did manage to find a single Tenelia veridis, some cooperative sand shrimp, some grubbies, but the real highlight of the dive was a quarter-sized scallop. They are so neat to look at with all those eyes looking out at you.

First dive with the 60mm macro lens! We arrived to cloudy skies and comfortable temperatures at OGB, but the main problem was the mountain of seaweed at the bottom of the ramp - yuck! I found a few grubbies, which were an excellent subject for my 60mm macro lens. We found a big, cooperative shorthorn sculpin and a big striped bass and a Doll Eualid shrimp who was out for a few images.

These tiny sculpin can be tricky to photograph as they quickly "hop" around loooking for cover and face different directions. Even when you get one, they're usually nestled in some cover and they are camouflaged to look just like their surroundings. For this one, I decided to go a little artsy and make the background black and white so the sculpin's natural colors pop out.
