Worm fact!
Did you know that there are several earthworm species which are considered 'arboreal', in that they're more associated with trees than in soil?
Some species, such as this Dendrobaena attemsi are often found in rot holes, under bark on trees and in decaying logs!

I found an earthworm while working in my new (first year) tiny courtyard garden, which last year was concrete and decking. I can't tell you how happy this had made me 😊.

Did you know there's a society in the UK dedicated to the conservation and supporting scientific research into earthworm ecology? I'm a member of the committee, and I have to say, they do great work!
Please consider supporting them by signing up as a member, if you are able to 😀

Have you ever thought to yourself "I sure do love earthworms, but I just wish they were smaller"? If the answer to that was yes, then Potworms (Enchytraeidae) are for you!
Potworms are basically just scaled-down versions of their earthworm relatives, and occur in large numbers in habitats that then to be less hospitable to earthworms, such as very acidic coniferous forest soils.

Here's an early Christmas present in the form of an early online publication!
Read about our work on "Earthworms and soil mesofauna as early bioindicators for landfill restoration" in the journal Soil Research, by heading over to: https://www.publish.csiro.au/SR/SR21286
Or if you don't have access just ping me a message for the PDF :blobgrimace:

"British Trust of Ornithology researchers call for better monitoring of soil invertebrates after new research, collating 100 years of data, suggests significant and previously undetected declines in UK earthworm abundance could have occurred".

Did you know that today is #WorldSoilDay?
🌱
The theme is "𝑆𝑜𝑖𝑙: 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑏𝑒𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑠", but we're going to focus on one of the #invertebrates responsible for keeping our soils healthy. The #worm. Very specifically the Lob Worm (Lumbricus terrestris) aka the Common #Earthworm, or the #Nightcrawler.

I added a new earthworm species to my macrophotography collection yesterday, with this vibrant 'bank/tree worm' (Bimastos rubidus). These small earthworms are surface-living (or 'epigeic'), and are commonly found in decaying organic matter such as deadwood, leaf litter and in suspended soils in tree hollows.
Once thought to be native to Europe, the genus Bimastos has recently been found instead to be native to North America, and has been introduced all across the world.

Since everyone else is doing one, here's my #Introduction! I'm a soil ecologist (researching invertebrates such as earthworms and springtails) and a macrophotographer.
You'll often find me out with my camera flipping rocks and logs, and taking photos of all the amazing life in the soil, and then sharing those photos online to spread the love for the hidden world beneath our feet!
