Antibiotic resistance at the forefront again and the issue of dealing with specific resistant bacteria without harming the beneficial ones in your system.

Hence antibacterials are out, but what about targeted bacteriophages?

Researchers in Denmark have engineered a phage with CRISPR that targets only E. coli to protect the microbiome from harm.

Bacterial communication occurs via proteins and packets of molecules, which can only be termed "talking" in the loosest of senses, but does involve the exchange of critical information.

Michigan State scientists have modified cyanobacteria to be able to communicate with modified E. coli and create a connected network of inducible behaviors for coordinated community activity.

We use E. coli for a lot of things. Like, a LOT. From agriculture to medicine to many industries you've likely never heard of, E. coli is the star of the genetic engineering world.

But it's a risk. Both for itself and the wider ecosystem.

Now, Harvard Medical School scientists have made E. coli with a "genetic firewall" to prevent viral infection of itself and possible gene transfer elsewhere.

Improving photosynthesis to then massively increase agricultural development is one of the holy grails of plant biology.

Therefore, understanding the influence of the enzyme Rubisco is key, but difficult due to the massive chloroplast regulatory systems involved.

Now, Australian researchers have inserted working Rubisco copies into E. coli to better analyze how it functions.
