Interesting perspective on recent heartbreaking events in the #Anglican / #Episcopal church. Hard to weigh breaking #fellowship over what you see as something that's doctrinally important. How to walk the tightrope over the tension between #ecumenical #unity and conscientious adherence to #Biblical #truth https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/split-stay-encouragement-anglican/ #TEC #ChurchOfEngland #TGC #TheGospelCoalition

It was a pleasure to start my morning with a prayer breakfast at St Chad's Cathedral as part of Pray 24 Brum. Some people will be staying to pray all day as different churches take an hour each - my plans take me elsewhere but I'll be thinking of you all!

Instead of going to Church today I attended a Catholic Mass online. As part of getting to know Gods family, partly because I'm home alone and partly because I'm pursuing church membership in my baptist congregation and attending a wide range of services seems appropriate to me as part of that journey. Anyway thought I'd share my thoughts.
First despite the differences it felt like 'my people' with the same Lord. I like the liturgy and the response and call. Even the differences I'm about to mention, whilst being significant. I didn't feel 'oh I better hide in the theological closet, things could get ugly if they know what I think', (something I've felt when crossing progressive/traditional theological boundaries when visiting churches). The cultural context and long history is probably part of this. Anyhoo.. The differences.
- The high place of Mary. The Service started with a Hail Mary. Was later referred to as Queen. I have different Mariology, this felt inordinate to me.
- Reading from the Apocraphya. Whilst not a surprised I'm confused about the lectionary (we don't have one) I was expecting four readings similar to https://lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu/. I realise as I type this the Mass is from 28/11/2021 NOT 28/11/2022...
- Homily referred to Judgement and included purgatory and Hell. It's very rare I hear in sermons a about Gods Judgement. I can't remember the last sermon I've heard that referred to Hell (It came up in Bible study last month though). So kudos for going there. We don't believe in purgatory, hearing it referred to as a Mercy instead of as an act of Judgement/Justice was a surprise, but I'm ignorant on purgatory.
- I like the call and response. Interactivity is hard on a one way video stream. In my church we have a roving mike, Q & A, joint worship, doodling/note taking supplies on the tables and prayer (kinda-interactive, it tends to be one person at the front praying and it's hard to stay focused. Call and response would be great to use here).
- The use of saints. We don't refer to saints, they aren't part of our service. I feel this is a weakness on our part. That a connection to Christendom, how we got here. Our dead brothers and sisters. The closet we have to that is a wall of honour from WWI & WWII with names of people from our church and an accompanying book called names to lives and some photos in the church hall of the recent past and newspaper clippings from further ago. As a mental exercise I could imagine talking to a saint (eg: MLK what do you think of this?) but I can't imagine asking for them to interceed, when I could go straint to Jesus. I suspect this is a reflection of protestant Theology (Priesthood of all believers).

Looking at the Nicene creed and the Athanasian creed. Ecumenism or the question of 'how much can we be different?' has been with us from the begining. Plus what's written at the end of Mark 9 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+9%3A38-49&version=VOICE #Christian #ecumenical
Looking around the Christians of the Fediverse. It is Christ that unites but who we think we should be opposed to differentiates us. May we point each other towards Christ.

🤔 my instance is one of the 2,965 instances on fediblock.
"allows all sorts or bigotry as long as they're christian. the admin does try to process reports though, so we only silenced the instance for now. ".
I'm not the admin but, considering I'm ecumenical. I want to have relationships with all Christians regardless of their state of sanctification or theology. I'm in the right spot.
I also appreciate the hours our moderator puts in.

Hi. I have worked in #publiclibraries for over 2 decades. I am interested in #socialjustice, #literacy and #theology with a healthy amount of #tea to boot (the drinking kind). I am exploring what to do with a call to #ordainedministry that has not gone as I had hoped and whether #chaplaincy might be for me. I am #Irish, living in #Wales, #Presbyterian but a very high one. Very #ecumenical.
That should get us going. #twittermigration

My banner picture is of my late grandfather and his two brothers. My grandfather is the one in the center. He was a small town #pastor for nearly 50 years. He was extremely #ecumenical and has always been my model in engaging with people who may not agree with me.
Last week, I had the privilege of presenting my paper, "Remembering the #God of #Life in a World on Edge" at the First #Ecumenical #Reformed Symposium in #Rome. This symposium, held at the Facoltà #Valdese di #Teologia, is also co-sponsored by the World Communion of Reformed Churches and the #Chiesa #Evangelical Valdese. It was such a pleasure to discuss #theology, ecumenism, and #Christian witness with leaders in the Reformed tradition throughout the world! #ReligiousStudies #religidons
