[The term Creole in #NOLA has differing connotations. It was initially used to denote people of mixed French and/or Spanish and African descent. Later, whites with French ancestry attempted to recoin the term to describe themselves and also to distinguish them from the white Americans in the city.

Everyone is aware of Edgar Degas' paintings of ballerinas in the Impressionist style. But did Edgar Degas have African ancestry? We'll never know for sure. His mother, Celestine Musson Degas, was from a wealthy Creole family in New Orleans, reportedly a descendant of the city’s first French and Spanish arrivals. She was related to the Black inventor and engineer, Norbet Rillieux.
