📢#OutNow in #OA: '#CheapPrint and #StreetLiterature of the #LongEighteenthCentury', edited by David Atkinson and Steve Roud.
This deeply researched collection offers a comprehensive introduction to the #eighteenthcentury trade in #streetliterature – #ballads, #chapbooks, and #popularprints – in England and Scotland.
Offering detailed studies of a selection of the printers, types of publication, and places of publication that constituted the cheap and popular print trade during the period, these essays delve into #ballads, #slipsongs, #storybooks, pictures, and more to push back against neat divisions between low and high culture, or popular and high #literature.
It will be of great value to scholars and students of eighteenth-century #popularculture and #literature, #print #history and the #booktrade, #ballad and #folk studies, children’s literature, and #socialhistory.

Done (though preassembled). Quite pleased with my Georgian pincushion based on a pattern from the 1770 Lady’s Magazine. Basic repertoire of stitches: stem, satin, padded satin, chain, French knots, split. Quite pleased with it. Question is, what will I tackle next (after the next database upload, which should be this week or next)? #ladysmag #Georgian #eighteenthcentury #needlework #embroidery #sewing #womenshistory #craft

Craziness of last few months has meant barely any stitching but back to my 1771 pincushion pattern from the Lady’s Magazine. Embroidery scissors for scale #needlework #embroidery #georgian #eighteenthcentury #womenshistory #materialculture #fiberarts

Since I just migrated from another server, I'm reintroducing myself.
Hi, I'm a cultural and intellectual historian of early modern Britain and Scandinavia. Currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Oxford, looking at 18th-century scholarly culture and identity at the universities of Oxford and Copenhagen.
Hope to engage in interesting conversations on a wide range of subjects. Let's keep in touch!

My co-workers just wrapped up an OCR remediation project for #EighteenthCentury Collections Online, using OCR tech that wasn't available when the archive was originally released.
Better quality data will also improve the tools we're currently building for parsing the data.
(my opinions are my own, and I do not speak for my employer)
#EighteenthCentury friends, is there no modern edition of Brooke's The Fool of Quality? I thought for sure Oxford, Penguin, or Broadview would have one, but I'm not finding anything ... am I just missing something?

Completely shocked and utterly honoured to have found out that my book, The Lady’s Magazine and the Making of Literary History (Edinburgh University Press, 2022) has won The Robert and Vineta Colby Scholarly book prize awarded annually by the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals. #womenshistory #periodicals #romanticism #womenswriting #nineteenthcentury #eighteenthcentury

This past week has been challenging (a euphemism!) so I need to sew at some point this weekend to help me reset. Here is my next project: a 1770 pincushion from the Lady’a Magazine. I have drawn it onto the fabric but now is the fun bit. Colours? Stitches? (The magazine had no instructions, which I love.) I know what stitches I want to use but can’t settle on colours. Ideas welcome. #embroidery #needlework #eighteenthcentury #ladysmag @fiberarts

Here’s my attempt at a September 1775 watch paper pattern from the Lady’s Magazine. Not totally happy with it. Why I chose the only one with a perfectly circular outline (which I couldn’t recreate) is beyond me, but it was a fun experiment. Thread card in third picture for scale (it is under 5cm in diameter). #embroidery #needlework #ladysmag #patternsofperfection #georgian #eighteenthcentury #fiberarts @fiberarts

One of my favourite things to teach is my final-year special module on the #eighteenthcentury body, Bodies of Evidence. And this week is one of my favourite weeks on Criminalised Bodies: Fairs and Felons. An afternoon of JackSheppard, criminal biography and the media and #truecrime ahead.
I am researching #EighteenthCentury #chapbooks and am looking for more #digitaleditions to see the full scope of the form. I been using McGill’s collection, the National Library of Scotland’s collection, and the University of York’s collection. Does anyone know of other collections?

All done. Pretty pleased with my #eighteenthcentury style needlecase made out of some modern #trishburr needle painted flowers I did a couple of years ago. Thanks to mastodon who suggested I repurpose these old projects as something useful. The #embroidery is better than my construction but still happy enough with it. @fiberarts

Taking the advice of fellow Tooters (is that what we call ourselves?) and turning some stitched flowers I did to practice needle painting (and which have been languishing in a bag) into a needle case (in the Georgian/ eighteenth century style). Flowers all backed with felt and cut into petals and half way through edging petal one with ribbon. #needlework #embroidery #craft #needlepainting #EighteenthCentury

My brilliant former professor published a new #book on the British novelist and playwright Thomas Holcroft.
In an extensive research examining his life, plays, memoirs and personal correspondence, the book sheds a new light on the revolutionary #playwright and is sure to make a fine addition to any academic institution's library.
