The Vatican returned three fragments of the Parthenon temple kept for centuries in what Pope Francis has called a gesture of friendship.

Greece welcomed the return of ancient artifacts from the Acropolis in Athens after the three pieces were taken more than 200 years ago.

It comes as Greece continues its bid to recover remains from the British Museum.

It's one of the oldest symbols of democracy, the 2,500-year-old Parthenon in the Greek capital Athens.

But for more than two centuries, the site has been missing some of its marble sculptures. They were taken by the British ambassador in the 1800s, then sold to the British Museum in London, where they're still on display.

Now pressure is mounting on the museum to return the Greek sculptures.

Turns out, if you steal lots of things from lots of places, you can make yourself a wee law that says you can't give them back, even if you wanted to, just in case you've nothing of your own left to show off.

When I saw the #Parthenon Sculptures (aka the #ElginMarbles) in their elaborate setting in the #BritishMuseum, many years ago, I thought, "They will never return these to Greece."

Thing I don't understand about the Parthenon Sculptures issue is that we have the ability to perfectly reproduce them in marble using 3D scanning and a CNC mill, keep the copies in London and send the originals back to Greece. Most visitors to the British Museum wouldn't be able to tell the difference, those who did could still appreciate the art and form of the carving, and we'd boost our diplomatic standing with our European friends.

The removal of the Parthenon sculptures from Athens was akin to removing the Eiffel Tower from Paris or Stonehenge from Salisbury, Stephen Fry has said, as he called for the return of the classic Greek sculptures to their country of origin.

The actor and writer, who has been advocating for the return of the sculptures held at the British Museum in London, said there was a “win-win” solution.

The Parthenon Marbles (Elgin Marbles) may be getting closer to being returned to Greece. The marbles were removed from the Parthenon in Athens (almost certainly illegally) by the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire over 200 years ago, and they have been kept in the British Museum since then. Greece has been actively asking for their return since the 1980s.

Elgin had Gen. Koehler’s troops loot the sacred Boustrophedon marble from a church at Sigaeum on 3 Nov. 1799.
He didn’t arrive at Athens till 3 April 1802 = 881 days later.
So it’s a fallacy that what he saw in Athens caused him to collect to protect art!
