I just finished about a third of #MobyDick, and so far, it's among the most masterful books I've read.

I naively expected my journey through the American canon would try my patience - maybe veering too wildly between tales of rugged exceptionalism or saccharine outdoors-y lyricism.

But in #Emerson, and so far in Melville, I've found startlingly self-aware & good-natured wariness about the slippery slope from early American individualism to unthinking exceptionalism.
