you can't load up a container ship with enough loitering drones to sneak-attack every car in the Los Angeles or Seattle areas, but if you have surveillance data on defense contractor employees it becomes practical to take out the assembly workers.

This should be the example in the web tracking white paper, to replace that boring "ads for running shoes" diagram

some good news: "In the first three months of 2023, telemedicine firms spent a quarter of what they did on targeted Facebook and Google ads during the same period last year, according to data from MediaRadar, an ad industry intelligence platform. Meanwhile, MediaRadar data shows nonprofit health systems also halved their spending on targeted ads during that same three-month period year-over-year."

The conventional wisdom on surveillance advertising is that we somehow need to balance the privacy interests of people who use ad-supported media against economic benefits of ad targeting.

But what if we don't? What if surveillance advertising is showing up in the ad slots, but not doing advertising's job? Maybe is a win-win?

all right, this Iowa privacy bill looks pretty minimal...but getting your privacy scripts to work on Iowa is going to be like the privacy nerd version of getting Doom to work on a small device.

challenge accepted -- anyone from Iowa who wants to try it out. I'm happy to help based on California experience

the big news from this case is not the money—it's the documents.

It's now on record that the company is violating California's /#CPRA by failing to disclose inferred data. Adding all the inferred columns about you to your "Download Your Information" file will be a big project

“Google is the only major ad platform that hides the vast majority of its ad-selling partners. The company conceals this information even after helping establish and publicly supporting an industry transparency standard for disclosing such sellers, which its competitors have largely adopted.” t.co/XKtfhm1l9e

does anyone else notice that if you read all the way to the end, Mobile Dev Memo is starting to turn into an newsletter?

Last time it was mobile ad tracking protection incentivizing mobile games to invest more in gameplay and content, now it turns out that banning surveillance ads might save someone from being hauled away in the middle of the night by the secret police. Sounds like a promising policy direction

I don't believe that tools and services can "protect my privacy." But I still use quite a few, including Privacy Badge and Permission Slip.

IMHO the more important reason for running privacy tools is to create a noticeable set of privacy people—a customer segment that marketing decision-makers will pay attention to—and redirect marketing budgets and VC funds away from surveillance marketing and toward and product innovation.

(there are plenty of people in today who are sympathetic to , but pitching a post-surveillance ad project to work or clients now is like pitching an HTML5 project when almost all users had Flash installed. Advertisers are always a couple steps behind early adopter users, and ad-supported sites are at best one step behind advertisers is going to be tech early adopters first, followed at some point by innovative advertisers+sites, then more users)

one feature that independent sites can use to help -- notify users when they don't have the tracking protection settings and/or extensions that would be available in their chosen browser

With , the ROI of targeted ads is lower relative to the cost of investing in the game--so Mobile Dev Memo predicts more investment in in-game content (so the player can "personalize" their experience by exploring the game)

Interesting implications for —if tech+regs drive down the ROI for advertising in other product categories, does that tend to drive up investment in improving products?

Mobile games vs ATT makes a good economics lab to understand this imho
