Been at work, but jumping in to say…

England Women win the first ODI by two wickets, bringing the Ashes Series 2023 even, 6 points all.

Kate Cross is my goddamn hero.

England Men win their first Test against Australia in the 2023 Ashes Series, even though they tried their best to hand the series to Australia.

I’m not one to harp on pro athletes; they are their own worst critics and they’re human, too. But man, did that game have to be that close?

There’s a huge difference between loving a sport and loving your team. I think I’m in the latter category but edging toward the former. If I don’t have a stroke in the meantime.

With two afternoon sessions plus a whole day to chase < 100 runs, most teams would be happy calmly chipping away at that deficit, frustrating the bowlers, but not taking any risks. Regular, boring, effective cricket.

Not this England team, though. They have the self-preservation instincts of a honey badger with a dynamite vest.

At lunch, England stand at 98 runs to win the Headingly Test, but with six wickets in hand.

Crawley, Duckett, Moeen Ali, and Joe Root are dismissed. Harry Brook is swinging for the boundaries and closing on a half-century, while captain Ben Stokes is happy to play the rock, as he has done so often in this Ashes.

Australia know they are one or two crucial wickets away from wrapping this one up. Whomever can keep their cool the longest will win this Test.

RESULT: After a nail-biting last few overs, which saw Alice Capsey, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Heather Knight fall in relatively short order, England Women win the IT20 game and the series with five wickets in hand.

A great result for a team that lost close games earlier this summer. They’ll be happy with that win.

But the Ashes aren’t over yet. Australia still lead the series 6 points to 2, and can retain the Ashes with a win in any of the upcoming games.

On the Women’s side, Australia ended 20 overs 155-7. Then, frustratingly, rain stopped play and shortened the match. Play has since resumed with England chasing, at time of writing, 80 runs with 10 overs remaining and 8 wickets in hand (Wyatt and Dunkley having fallen while I was typing this.)

The pressure is all on England; they have to chase the runs in less-than-ideal conditions. And if they fail, Australia retain the Ashes.

Been driving, finally got a chance to check in with the cricket.

The Leeds Test ended with England keeping all wickets in hand (🙏🙏🙏) and a very achievable run chase ahead of them. However, morning sessions are dangerous; valuable batters have gotten out early and forced the mid-batters and tailenders to pick up the slack. As in-control as England seem, it could all turn on them at any moment. Such is the drama of a test match.

Also worth noting that the third Women’s IT20 is on. England are bowling, and have already kept Australia to 52 for 2, with about 12 overs left.

Every game for England is a must-win, Men’s and Women’s game.

Checking in on the test, and Australia end the innings with 224 all out.

England’s run chase is 251 to win. Two days and change to do it without giving away ten wickets.

England have the chance to seize the game, if the opening batters can get settled and start adding runs. Australia, on the other hand, are playing to retain the Ashes, and if they can force England into costly mistakes (something they’ve done in the past), the series will be theirs.

Chris Woakes takes another wicket to leave Australia with only four in hand.

However, Australia’s lead is increasing to almost 200. England only managed 237 in their last innings, so the game is in no way over.

England will need to pull a better batting performance out of this team, full stop. Otherwise, the Ashes shall remain in Australia.
